Do you have a positive mentality?

So reading through a number of threads from either off topic or just general city talk it’s alarming the number of exceptionally negative people about.

Now the definition of positive thinking is;
Positive thinking is an emotional and mental attitude that focuses on the good and expects results that will benefit you. It's about anticipating happiness, health and success – essentially, training yourself to adopt an abundance mindset and cultivate gratitude for your own successes and those of others.

For example some people seemingly always think the worst whether it’s Covid news or just a general mentality, while I try and shelter the crap and just focus on the good times hopefully coming - - as truth be told too much bad news makes me anxious and isn’t productive to ones mental health.

Just curious how people feel in general as I know the mind works in mysterious ways and people probably really dwell on possible bad news rather than the probable good times.

I honestly think we are in for an incredible summer with jobs thriving and a really boom in most sectors.
Whose definitions are you using?...

I didn't die today...positive or negative?

18 month ago and now have changed that

I see negativity (as a mentality) as a form of insecurity. Being positive means being able to put your outlooks out there and risk the "disappointment" of being wrong and having egg on your face. With negativity, you set the bar low so that if you can never be let down so to say.

It happens a tonne on here, and it's the uglier side of Bluemoon. There's plenty of positives; most specifically the excellent humour and insightful discussion, as well as the loopy Off-Topic threads.

But with the actual football, it can be depressing. There's so much negativity. It's ridiculous. I've highlighted the Burnley pre match thread lately, which was sad. A bunch of posters decrying the team to face Burnley because Mahrez and Mendy were playing, acting like we were in legitimate danger of losing.

But it's a general trend. How many times is a team announced and we have 15 pages of complaining about the 1 player in or out of the team that they aren't happy with, as opposed to the 10 others that they are happy with? How many times to people on this forum write us off? Plenty of prematch threads explain how we will lose. Plenty of posters were saying how we were done for and how Pep should go only 1 month ago. At one point earlier this season people were suggesting De Bruyne was done. How many people had written off Stones? Written off Gundogan? Written off Zinchenko? There's a bunch of posters that want Sterling gone and they vocalise it at every opportunity. There are a handful of posters that go out of there way to declare Jesus and Rodri unsuitable for the future of the club on a frequent basis.

That's why it annoys me when people apologise for getting it wrong about Stones or Gundogan. Because I'm 100% sure that the majority of them didn't learn from it and continue their negativity towards someone else.

It doesn't have to be that way either. Posters on this forum are smart and if they took a moment to actually think about things, and see the upside, they'd have so much positive and thoughtful contributions. They need to understand that there's nothing to be afraid of and it's ok to be optimistic. Sure, there are letdowns involved, but in my opinion it's better to be happy and occasionally be disappointed than to live in misery and occasionally be happily surprised. Everyone can be better if they want to be.

it's the difference between engaging on the club's level of ambition for a meaningful debate or just being content with being disengaged and just happy the club will be in no danger or jeopardy for a while. Football fans thrive of the emotional journey from win v loss and to recreate that with our team you have to come to the club's ambition level, and if players who underperform and are half-arsed keep getting chances over our in-form lads then there's more doubt the club's ambitions will be met.

I do agree. But with the bolded I think, whilst it's one thing to match the club's ambition level, is it worth doing that whilst ignoring the club's thinking level?

For instance, if we lose a game we'll be upset. Fair enough, so would the club. But would the club declare any underperforming player a player that needs to be sold? Did the club think back in November, that Pep's time had come (despite him signing an extension in November)? We have people asking for Sterling to be sold after he missed a penalty, did the club place him on the transfer list?

I've said time and time again that there's nothing wrong with reacting emotionally, especially when there's a clear rationale behind it. But the truth is that despite what you say, there is often very little meaningful debate. I can appreciate how 'happy clapping' could be seen as annoying an unconstructive, but bet wetting and throwing toys out of the pram is effectively destructive and definitely not akin to the club's philosophy.

It's only fair that fans align to the club's philosophy if they align their feelings to the club's ambitions. You can't have your cake and eat it.

I think it's in bad faith to suggest that a positive outlook is equal to being simply content and equal to not being engaged. It's important to understand that some people are willing to try and see over the horizon and that's what their viewpoints are reflected by. It's no better or worse, and equally valid.

The club is an entity, fans are human beings. By connecting on that level and rekindling that emotional connection, it's natural the best and worst comes out, especially with a generation coming through who haven't had the hard times, add to the emotional stress people are under these days where football is a vent they can let out their real world frustrations where it doesn't matter, which I certainly do.

The club, and the leadership, can see a shit performance, draw up a transfer list, plan for new targets, Pep and the coaching team can target it in training etc, the fans have no power or influence or outlet apart from on here. Pep flails his arm in the air, chunters away in Catalan and goes and whinges to Lillo and Borrell. Kun gets Alvarez to tweet for him, the entire population of Algeria spams social media if Mahrez doesn't play, we post on here.

It's the same exasperation as seeing some people not wearing a mask, having house parties, going on holidays in a pandemic. Difference is that's the real world and will kill people. This place is just drop-in counselling and real world rehab for City fans.

Sure. For you.

But this place is a lot of things to different people. Some people connect emotionally with the club in different ways. Some people post on here for the discussion, some people use this place as an emotional sound board, some people use it as a means to discuss transfers etc.

For instance, I enjoy this place for discussion and debate. When I'm upset, I process my emotions differently than to post on here. My counselling and rehab would be done via different means, and I feel plenty others who post on here, including many who were City fans during the hard times, would be the same.

I understand your perspective, but you need to understand that this forum serves a different purpose for different people.

And to be honest, from my perspective, emotional connection does not excuse rampant negativity. Again, from my perspective. And unlike the real world, people have time to think and read what they type before they send their posts. You can argue to until the cows come home that negative reactions are part of being human, and I'd agree as I did last time. But I will continue to argue that a negative mindset is a choice and choosing to focus on the negatives and be a toddler about it isn't a beneficial way of discussing anything ever.

Feel free to vent away on whatever. I won't stop you being yourself and if it's healthy for you then so be it. But I honestly believe that with a more positive mindset then that need to vent at all would barely exist in the first place.

The club is an entity, fans are human beings.

Also, it's a bit hypocritical to suggest the fans should align with the club's ambitions but then use this as a means of saying they don't need to align with the club's thought process (which is operated by human beings). You can't have your cake and eat it.

I would think a positive mindset would entail not taking negative posting too seriously.

Besides sometimes there's piss-taking, like I call Rodri "Plodri" because I find it amusing and it's apt. Some people whinge on end that I could call him that, some people also find it funny.

I don't want to see Mahrez or Mendy in a City shirt, and I'll say that every time they get picked. I want Jesus to score more goals, I'll point that out when he has another goalless game. I'll also be the bigger man when Gundogan demonstrably goes up several levels and plays to his potential and does what I said I wanted him to do and give him the kudos for it.

At the end of the day at the ground if we give the ball away you'll hear the groans and "fuck off"s around the ground and on here it's just a written version. I could equally point to the same 5 posters in any thread about Brexit whinging endlessly about it instead of being constructive and bringing progressive ideas for the table or highlighting where the opposition will look to bring positive changes. Equally I could argue you're being rather negative about "negative" posters rather than brushing it off.

Ultimately, we're having a chat about it, and we live in a world where none of us are really getting what we so desire at the moment. The teams on a really good run, but I reserve the right to go "FFS Plodri" when they're on the teamsheet tomorrow night, part in jest, part because I'd rather see Foden, Bernie or Torres play. I'd say it at the bar before the game in the ground and I'll say it on here, and you're more than welcome to disagree and have a discussion and at the end of the day, negativity/positivity is only determined by our own interpretation of the other person's posts, and unless it's signposted it's rarely as clear as the spoken word.

I don't 100% agree with you, but I think you've made your point well enough by this point for me to leave it be. Thanks for the discussion.

Positive mentality isn’t always positively commenting on something. So highlighting the negatives about a player but also saying where they should be improving or offering alternatives, either in their position so we get the best out of them elsewhere on the pitch, or with better players either already at the club who can play ahead of them or who we can possibly sign as a replacement, so we as a club improve; is a positive mentality.

There aren’t that many people whose sole Bluemoon posting pattern is to log on, slag someone off for a poor game or for generally not being good enough, don’t tell us where or how they can improve, don’t mention their strengths (because they’re just coming from a negative angle so aren’t there to mention any positives about the player), offer no alternatives or solutions to the problem, contribute nothing but negativity to the forum and then log off again. This is negativity but how many do that?

People who may highlight something they don’t like about a player will often also comment when that player something well, will post their positive reactions to the players they think are doing well, or as I say offer alternatives to why they think the negatives they see in a player can be improved on. I’d say these are positive posters.
