Do you support the RMT?

Strikes aren't meant to be convenient fuck your Christmas.
They are supposed to be in solidarity with the workers. Christmas will be a make or break for many, whether it be for the business they work in or for getting home last minute because they have to work until then because they have no choice.

PS. For perspective, I won’t be using trains to get home, I’ll be using my car (which I’m lucky to be able to run, unlike many). I will, most probably, be working elsewhere, covering for those who are striking in public service. However, if the opportunity comes, I will want to get into Manchester with my better half to meet up with old friends and spend a bit of money on Christmas Eve.

IMO, striking on such dates is a loser all around and that attitude will lose me as a supporter of what you are trying to achieve. Strike on another day(s), Mick lashing out like this has not been his finest day.

Didn't he say it was just shifts starting at 1800 on Christmas Eve (Saturday 24th)? So most services will be running on Christmas Eve.

I don't think the strikers care if they lose you as a supporter tbh.

Every single strike in this dispute has resulted in calls of..… Any time but then..

First it was school exams, then school holidays, then the Queen dying, then the London marathon, then some poppy sale, now Christmas.

Strikes that don’t inconvenience people are strikes that are a waste of time.

If the government and the train companies genuinely wanted to settle these strikes, they would do in a matter of a couple of days. No one wants to lose eight or 10 days pay over Christmas and New Year. They know the staff are crying out for any offer even approaching something acceptable that they can agree to.

But for reasons best known to themselves they are throwing millions of pounds away actively encouraging these strikes to continue. They know these pathetic offers they’ve made Network Rail staff aren’t going to be accepted. They also haven’t even allowed an offer to be put to the train companies staff yet.

If your Christmas is disrupted through train strikes this year, you can blame the unions if it makes you feel better. But it is the government who holds the key to bringing them to an end. And they’re showing no inclination that they do.

Spot on.

The other thing is this… They’re ruining Christmas, line is bullshit anyway. The Network Rail strike between the evening of the 24th and the morning of the 27th is about disrupting maintenance work which goes on every year when the railway is shut down for two days. There’s virtually no trains scheduled to run during the length of that strike anyway.

Think all these strikes are an attempt to bring the government down, although they dont seem to need any help on that score. The main angle of the train operators one seems to be operating procedures.Ticket offices that sell 17 tickets a week do not need to be there although there should be a prescence on every station whilst trains are operating. The walking of lines looking for cracks is outdated when technology is better than the human eye.Guards on trains every train should be a 2 person service no matter what. There are pros and cons to all the conditions to what they are striking for and bosses cannot be allowed to just rip up everything, but there are also jobs that dont need doing or merging to people with multiple skills. We have to accept that.Fair play to the unions for trying to get the best deal for the members but there has to be compromise. The companies give up something the workers give up something and are compensated as such.

I genuinely do not get the need to strike, but I do back them as do I the nurses and posties etc...

For me the very simple solution which will affect the nation would be for EVERYONE to simply work to rule. You turn up for work, but you don't take a train out unless the management can guarantee you will be back at your base by the end of shift. Nurses say no to overtime to cover shifts. Posties the same, no overtime stop delivering at a time which will get you back to the yard on time. Trust me it may take a little longer to have the desired effect, but you will achieve this and more importantly the public will stay onside AND they will realise just how poorly run the businesses are and their dependency on the goodwill of workers.
