Does the captains role mean anything now?

I was disturbed at the way the armband was passed around before Silva wore it on Wednesday. As soon as Yaya's number came up I automatically assumed it would go to Zabba.

It made me wonder do the players see the role as an irrelevance now or were the team lacking a real leader on the night?

What do you mean "The way it was passed around"? You're upset because Yaya gave an armband to De Bruyne to pass on to Silva, rather than wasting everyone's time walking half the pitch to give it to him?

At the rate Yaya walks, we'd still be waiting for the exchange now.

I admit I only saw it on TV.

When did Silva overtake Zabba in the pecking order? As someone posted in another thread has it become just a vanity thing for the big players rather than what it should be for?

Silva was captain earlier in the season. He seems to like the role. He's only a World Cup and Euro winner, after all.

The game was at a crucial stage, I would rather players focus on the match than an armband - I'm glad they just gave it the player closest and carried on, Zab did not need to go to the other side of the pitch. It would have been an exercise in vanity

I don't think Zab has ever been captain under Pellegrini has he? It was Mancini that had him as vice captain. For some reason Zab is a long way back in the captain list. I don't really like keepers having it as they can't really do the role as effectively, you can't have them running upto the ref having a word every foul otherwise Joe is the obvious choice. Personally, i'd like Fernandinho to have it when Kompany isn't fit. Leads by example.

I wouldn't have Silva as captain just for the fact that he can barely speak English

He's my favorite ever city player but I can't imagine him pushing the team over the line in a battle. Amazing player but not who I'd point to as a captain. Captaincy is about personality and leadership more than footballing ability although admittedly it helps.

I think we have 3 players who stand out as captain material:
Kompany
Zaba
Hart

and then 2 who can fill in:
Yaya
Fernandinho

Yaya certainly isn't someone who captains by example but he is extremely driven and vocal
Dinho is the opposite

The top 3 have a mix of both
