Does the captains role mean anything now?

The game was at a crucial stage, I would rather players focus on the match than an armband - I'm glad they just gave it the player closest and carried on, Zab did not need to go to the other side of the pitch. It would have been an exercise in vanity

I'm not sure if it showed it on TV, but Yaya gave the armband to Clichy, and he then instantly gave it to Silva. The players must have been told Silva was next in line if Yaya went off.

I think the idea that a captain has to be Terry Butcher screaming with a bloodied bandage on their head, is a bit old fashioned now. Silva leads by example, he's very brave in that he always wants the ball no matter the situation. He's also taken on more of an organising role this season, you regularly see him telling players where to move on the pitch when he's not on the ball.

Kompany is a brilliant captain and I wouldn't want anyone over him to do it. After that we are probably a little bit lacking in natural leaders, but I think Hart, Zabba, Fernandinho and Silva all have football leadership qualities, but in a slightly different way.

When there are issues to be addressed Manuel pulls the following to one side at training or team meetings ;

Kompany
Toure
Hart
Kolarov
& more recently Silva.
These are his lieutenants & help to communicate key messages or reinforce them.
That's kind of the armband order.

I wouldn't have Silva as captain just for the fact that he can barely speak English
I'm sure every player on the team can speak a bit of Spanish or speaks it fluently enough to converse in a football situation at this point. I'm sure Dave also speaks more English than we're aware of.

He's my favorite ever city player but I can't imagine him pushing the team over the line in a battle. Amazing player but not who I'd point to as a captain. Captaincy is about personality and leadership more than footballing ability although admittedly it helps.
He gets very, very fired up at referee decisions. If just being loud and brash is all that you think it needs, I'm sure he can be a stereotypically "good leader" if the situation calls for it.

I was there and wasn't paying too much attention to who got the armband - again though, Clichy was on that side of the pitch so would make sense for him to get it in my opinion

I reckon about half of our team know next to no Spanish. Also referees don't speak it and a captain has to do a lot of media of which Silva does next to none and when he does, it's with a translator.

Language is the reason i think Yaya is vice captain..There's not a player in the team he can't fluently communicate with.

Willy, Demichelis, Otamendi, Zaba, Navas, Aguero, Fernandinho were all on the pitch when he got the armband, 6 fluent spanish speaker and i'm fairly certain Fernandinho knows it as well, so 7 people and Silva means we had 8 spanish speakers on the pitch when he was captain. The fact his english isn't too good shouldn't matter. I'd also be shocked by now if our other players hadn't learned a bit of spanish.
