Dogs/Puppies

Got a working cocker pup 3 weeks ago. KC registered.

No way could he be left for more than an hour. They need constant attention. When they are not sleeping. He does a lot of sleeping. Needs water topping up and only the right amount of food at each time due to dogs eating everything. All the time.

3 weeks in and he only shits in the garden. Mostly pisses out there as well. Jabs all done so Saturday is his first proper walk rather than the garden.

Turned my quiet home life upside down but dogs are worth it.

If anyone has any good tips on socialisation I'm open to them. Our lad is very fearful and skittish around other dogs. Fine with people whenever they come into the house but isn't too fond in an outdoor setting. We've had him since 12 weeks and in all the time with us he's never had a negative or frightening experience with people or dogs so we are struggling to understand where the fear comes from. The lockdowns have made it hard to encounter situations where we can immerse him. Just want him to have a good time but at the same time don't want to force him into being something he may not be.

This is the upcoming issue with all the lockdown pups people have bought. Youve got to sort it or you will have a lifelong problem with him. Do you know any mates with dogs that you can walk him with and can bring to your house for him to start socialising with?

Agree completely. Unfortunately we don't....not against getting help from a trainer at all though if necessary, which we increasingly believe to be the case.

Are there any parks near you? From experience other dog owners are always eager to help. You will get chatting to them and just explain the issue, Im sure they will let you walk with them for a bit. If yours is nervous it will show that with aggression. Walk either side of a path with someone else slow and steady and see how that goes

Thats a good tip. We also take him to a local beach and all the other dog walkers seem to be very understanding of him. So far he hasn't shown any aggression but he tries to hide and will run behind us if we try to stop and say hello. The path tip is definitely one I'd like to try out.

Has he met any other collies out on your walks?

A very good point. Also might be worth considering, if he's reasonably obedient, letting him off the lead. One of our dogs, a lab, gets a bit aggresive on the lead but he's far from being nervous, he's Ok after a few seconds but this first reaction is to give the big toughie routine. Off the lead he's fine. I think that by restraining them they dont have the freedom to get away if it all goes wrong. Other dog walkers/owners will relate to this and most will oblige. We have 4 to deal with and within a minute of meeting 'a new face ' they're all just fine, they find their own level.

Yeah I agree. As soon as I had the most important command 'wait' nailed down I had mine off the lead where appropriate like the beach or fields. He stops dead on that command so after that get the recall sorted with treats. There are still the rare times where I have to go and fetch him but he never runs off anywhere. Generally bang on with it now.
Mine is 18 months now and he demands exercise and is busy. He had the chop this time last week, and the change in the dog is incredible already. He has a lovely temperament anyway but he is so much more settled and calmer now
