I'll just be observing; as said, you're free to shoot yourself in the foot.
It's not brazen at all, it's actually fairly logic.
You're currently part of the EU, meaning that you have a considerable say in any of the matters decided by the EU.
Your current influence is on par with that of Germany and France but, somehow, that position of power is being translated -in some minds- into being a victim and slave to the big bad EU.
So in an attempt to regain sovereignty, while it's actually intact, you're giving up on that considerable influence and giving up on access to a sizeable market/customs union that you need more than it needs you - you're on an island after all. Good luck with the free trade agreements, I'm sure they'll be such an improvement.
