The same way that a UK Govt can have a landslide on less than 50% of the popular vote. None of these systems are perfect but they are what they are - they work more or less and nobody seems to moan if they are on the "winning" side. What I think you are looking for is each vote counting - PR. That was rejected by the UK population in the 2011 referendum - what you end up with is chaos and anarchy as parties try and form a government post election. And governments that last a few month before collapsing and losing their assembled majority often over small disagreements.

The last UK election threw up some startling results - SNP 4.7% of the vote returned 56 MPs, UKIP with 12.6% of the vote returned 1 MP. There would be riots if UKIP returned 82 MPs (pro rata, not proportional rep) with the whole nation dammed as being racist.
