If it were on matters of domestic policy; i.e healthcare, schooling, then his "yes men" might just suffice in facilitating his wants.

On matters of international peacekeeping/national security? Not a fucking prayer. He would need the heads of all tri-services and NATO to go along with his attitude towards Russia. It would finish him politically in a matter of hours. He's a crank, but I don't believe he would truly follow through with such an attitude anyway; remember, this is a man renowned for fantastical rhetoric that remains just that, rhetoric. I think he's just appealing once more to the ultra-nationalist, right wing faction of the electorate that he needs onside.

You're right, the US of today isn't comparable. But the day Dumb Donald gets back into office that won't be the case. His lawyers are in court arguing that a sitting POTUS is immune from prosecution of all crimes up to and including the murder of his political enemies and his advisors have already endorsed turning the military on American citizens. He's running ads about taking ridding the government of all "deep state" operatives (ie anybody who wants to limit his power). What does that mean? It means judges will either clear the way for him to do what he wants or they'll be killed. He's also talked about banning news outlets who criticize him so that's another check that will be gone. So we'll have a Putin-loving egomaniac with a thirst for vengeance in charge of the most powerful military on the planet.

He also praises Putin, Xi and Kim Jong Un for being smart because the "rule with an iron fist" (he's said this many times) and has nothing but disdain for the democracies of western Europe because their leaders don't say nice things about him. Dissolving NATO would probably happen in the first month or two and then Putin would be free to start invading former Soviet states, Poland and other countries in eastern Europe. At that point fascists in Germany/Italy would start with the terrorist attacks and the movement will spread. This is not a joke, he's deadly serious about these things and talks about them openly. They just had their head of propaganda (Tucker Carlson) over in Russia interviewing Putin and trying to make him look good to American voters. They've also had Orban speak at their GQP conferences in the US. They've gone way beyond the flirting stage with fascists and are now giving them an under-the-table hand jibber.

On the face of it, that scenario almost sounds too impossible to believe but I suppose anything is possible with this crank. It gets me how he can call himself a patriot when he holds such views.

Things that haven't even dented his popularity among his base:

-Making fun of a disabled reporter
-Making fun of a military family who lost a son in action
-Bragging about committing sexual assault
-Being found legally liable for sexual assault/rape
-Floating the idea that injecting disinfectants could cure covid
-Photo ops with Kim Jong Un
-Inciting an insurrection
-Telling insurrectionists that he loves them
-Calling insurrectionists political prisoners and vowing to pardon them
-Causing irreparable damage to the faith in our elections
-Stealing, refusing to return and hiding our nation's secrets at a golf resort
-Threatening the secretary of state of Georgia to throw out election results and declare him the winner
-Doxxing American citizens claiming they were part of the conspiracy to steal the election
-Saying that he will enact the death penalty for drug dealers and that there won't be long trials, just executions
-Saying he trusts Putin more than our FBI, CIA and 15 other intelligence agencies
-Using campaign money to pay off mistresses
-Taking and bragging about taking millions from hostile governments while he was POTUS
-Taking away a woman's right to choose
-Calling dead soldiers "losers and suckers"
-Bragging about going backstage to look at naked children at the MIss Teen USA pageant
-Years of palling around with Jeffrey Epstein
-Telling the police to "rough up suspects" by slamming their heads into cars when they're arresting them
-Tear gassing peaceful protestors in order to have a photo op in front of a church he never went to
-Knowling lying about the severity of covid

If none of that cost him any support with his base upending the agreements/treaties we've had for 75 years isn't going to make a difference to them.
