Dunne and Dusted

I still dont think Dunne should be sold while TBH is at the club.

Nedum is still carrying an injury, Kompany wont be available till into September so If we get any injuries we potentially end up with TBH in the team, hes a bottom half of the prem player at best as Chelsea found out.

Personally I would like us to make an effort to get rid of TBH, Benjani and Garrido. Keep Dunne, hes excellent cover at the very least. If he absolutely has to go Ie states he wants to, should be sold to Sunderland or similar not to a direct competitor in the league like Villa or Everon.

If he goes, I hope he will get a fully deserved testimonial, regardless of 'needing' to be here another year.

Such a shame about Dunnie. For me, on his day he's as good as any defender in the Prem. If *only* he didn't make those stupid mistakes every now and again, he'd still be top top top class.

I know where your coming from, but got to disagree slightly. It is about more than the mistakes, his contribution is poor, and always has been, he has lost a bit of pace too. No doubt on his day he was very impressive along with being very underrated. But as times move on so do players, we all know really Dunne is not good enough for a top 4/5 team, and yes i would like him to stay, but there is no point. He IS still good, he hasn't exactly gone shit over night, so for a player that deserves all the best it is probably right for him to move on.

Thankyou Dunnie!

OK, come up with a club that will pay 60k a week for him that doesn't already have 2 CBs better than him and we are all set! Right now the reason Dunnie might move is not that TBH is better than him, but because TBH has no market value, have we learnt nothing from the whole Danny Mills thing?

Not sure if this has been posted so far, but thought I'd include it as The Guardian have had a pretty good summer in terms of being accurate about City, which may suggest this article is right:

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/aug/26/aston-villa-richard-dunne-transfer" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009 ... e-transfer</a>

Aston Villa agree fee for Richard Dunne and close in on Stephen Warnock

• Manchester City accept Villa's £6m offer for their captain
• Blackburn want £7m for full-back

Aston Villa have agreed a fee with Manchester City for Richard Dunne, believed to be about £6m, and hope to follow up the signing of the Republic of Ireland centre-half with the acquisition of the Blackburn Rovers full-back Stephen Warnock.

Villa confirmed today that they are in talks with Blackburn about Warnock, although it appears that their pursuit of Dunne is more advanced as Martin O'Neill seeks to strengthen his threadbare squad.

The Villa manager has identified Dunne as a replacement for Martin Laursen, who retired at the end of last season, and is likely to offer the 29-year-old the captaincy at the Midlands club when he discusses personal terms. Dunne has almost three years remaining on his contract at City but the arrival of Joleon Lescott this week, following the signing of Kolo Touré earlier in the summer, means that he faces the prospect of spending much of the season on the substitutes' bench.

Everton had also considered a move for the former Goodison Park trainee but David Moyes is now closing in on Portsmouth's Sylvain Distin, whom O'Neill has tracked for much of the summer without any success. The Villa manager turned his attention to Dunne when it became clear that the central defender was likely to become available and will be hopeful that a deal can be agreed in time for him to make his debut against Fulham on Sunday.

There is more work to do on the Warnock transfer, with Villa yet to meet Blackburn's asking price, which is believed to be close to £7m. However, discussions between the two clubs are ongoing and, with Sam Allardyce, the Blackburn manager, resigned to losing the defender and Warnock making it clear that he would like to join Villa, it seems a matter of when and not if an agreement will be reached for the former Liverpool player.

I feel the reason Mark Hughes could say Dunne is still our Captain at the press interview today is:

  • Lescott will not play tomorrow
  • Dunne will not play Sunday: Decision Time
  • Dunne will be at Aston Villa by Sunday, probably Friday

In essence I will be amazed if Dunne fails to take the hint and leave; damned by actions and faint praise.

If he is moving, I doubt he will play tomorrow, because I'm sure we won't want to cup-tie him, I'm guessing it will be Toure and Ned if Lescott doesn't play.

If Dunnie wants to go then I am happy for that to happen. However if he wants to stay and settle for being 3rd/4th choice then I would be equally happy.

You would think that given Nedum's injury record and Kolo off to the African Nations that he could still clock 20 games.

If he does go he will get one hell of a reception when he runs out at Eastlands next - and a better one when he scores an O.G and then get's sent off for a pointless foul :-)
