Dzeko and Kolarov are both world class

Rooney's world class in my opinion.

He's not, bud, absolutely nowhere near.

If he was at any other club, other than United, where myth can be romanticised (Jones the new Duncan Edwards) and perpetuated...

He stands out because he is the only player United can regularly rely on.

Giggs wasn't world class, either, nor Scholes.

Top players, but world class is reserved for the very few.

Granted, Messi is yet to do it at international level, but Rooney has done nothing since he first came in the scene at Euro 2004 in Portugal.

Rooney won't be spoken about in 30 years time outside of Old Trafford and SKY pundits.

For the record, Bobby Charlton wasn't world class, not fit enough to wipe Law and Bell's arse after a curry supper.

The only world class player this country has ever produced is Bobby Moore. I wasn't alive to see it, but my eyes tell me everything I need to know watching it back

We'll have to agree to diagree, Tolm. He's world class by my definition: he'd get in my world squad. Giggs was definitely not world class. Scholes was pretty close. What Rooney offers, as well as the potential to run games, open defences and get superb goals, is the ability to win the ball back through graft. When you throw that whole package together, he's a top drawer player.

In terms of world class players produced by this country: that's a totally different question and an interesting one. In my lifetime, Gazza was world class around the time of the 1990 world cup. Bryan Robson was world class in the 80s. In recent years, Owen was pretty damn close to it when he had pace but probably lost the pace just before he reached that level. Shearer was pretty close to world class too, maybe maybe not.

Beyond that, I can't think of many more in my lifetime.

.

Your standards for world class are clearly not as high as mine ;)

Bryan Robson? world class, ha ha. Never did anything in the 80s with United and was too busy being a crock for England to be considered anything more than decent.

The definition of world class is also through longevity, so although Gazza was on his way, it was never realised.

Tevez and Rooney have the same attributes in terms of influencing their teams through sheer weight of will.

But both are way below world class.

There are less than six players at any one time who can be deemed world class IMO.

Rooney is already on the downward progression. He has not realised his street football mentality, what made him a potential world class player in the making.

A myth, and has been for two years.

Possibly, but Garincha lays claim to the crown of that era as the best there was.

Puskas and De Stefano have to be in with a shout

Wouldn't it be more reasonable to say a player is worldclass if he's generally considered to be the global #1 in his position?

It would seem a bit odd to me every era only knows one or two worldclass players. But then again, maybe it all comes down to definition.

World class is very much a matter of opinion but I'd say the term is often used too generously and easily about players who do not deserve the accolade, which should be reserved for a select few.

Far too many Rags has undeservedly been described as world class; especially by idiots that follow them and think EC was god.

-- Mon Feb 06, 2012 12:51 pm --

Wasn't Frank Swift a world class keeper?

Spot on Tolm..

Rooney is a vastly overrated footballer, excellent prem player but that is about it...

The stats say it all, he hasnt scored in a major international tournament since 2004..

Sums him up really..
