Mathematics of the Ebola outbreak reveal near-impossibility of global containment: it's already too late according to some.

Current analysis shows that Ebola infects 1.5 - 2.0 new people for every new infection, and the cycle time on this is less than 30 days. This means that the number of people infected with Ebola is growing by roughly 150% - 200% every month.

If you nearly double something every month, it doesn't take long for it to explode out of control. Imagine having a bank account that started in January with just £1,000 and magically doubled every month. In February, you'd have £2,000; in March you'd have £4,000 and so on. By December, you would have over £2 million sitting in the bank.

Ebola spreads in much the same way: exponentially. It isn't a simple linear increase; it's an exponential explosion that can grow from a small number of isolated patients to a global pandemic seemingly overnight.

just reading the news and Belgium airlines are the only European airline still flying into and from Sierra Leone. A pregnant woman who flew from Sierra Leone into Belguim and gave birth soon after is being tested for Ebola.

This raises quite a few questions - Why are Belgium airlines still running this risk? Why was a pregnant woman so near to term allowed to fly? Why did she risk flying so near to term if not to get to a "safe zone" to give birth? Panic seems to be setting in and people wanting to get away from these areas no matter what

My niece is married to a pilot who flies a private jet for a wealthy Nigerian who deals in oil and pipelines. I was talking to her last night and she said that when passengers are coming through the terminal and being checked they are using one of those wooden lollipop like sticks when they look into your mouth but the frightening thing is they then use the same stick for the next passenger and the next and so on. Also if you want to bring anything into Nigeria then as long as you cross the right palm with the right stuff then everyone turns a blind eye and you can take anything in.

I dont believe that they would use the same stick for everyone. No one is that stupid, surely?

Mind blowing stuff if true, but then again a lot of Africans believe you can cure Aids with witchcraft.

W.H.O. has said that there is every chance that there will be 10,000 new cases every WEEK in W.Africa before Christmas. The current death rate is around 70%.

Winter flu kills elderly, already ill and vulnerable people mainly over 75 years of age. It does not kill children and generally healthy adults.

22,000 children die every day from poverty in Africa, I don't see the Big Pharma companies advertising that as much as the cure for Ebola they can provide at a price.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned there could be 10,000 new cases of ebola per week within two months.

Health officials said that 8,914 cases of ebola have now been reported in West Africa, including 4,447 deaths.

WHO assistant director general Bruce Aylward told a press conference in Geneva that the total was expected to top 9,000 by the end of this week.

He warned that the death rate from the current outbreak has now risen to 70%. It was previously estimated at about 50%.

I hope his ability to deal with viral epidemics is better than his maths.
