I read that somehwere else. I'd hazard a guess that that's a FFP dodge.

Yes and no. It's true that bonuses don't count toward the wage bill, but Soriano did exactly the same thing at Barca when he first went there in the pre FFP days. He obviously believes you get better value by dishing out large bonuses rather than simply giving huge wages.
Or more incentive for the players to perform?

Absolutely. IIRC from the Barca documentary - the structure of these types of deals is such that you can get several bonuses for passing landmarks over the course of a season. So i Imagine a striker for example or an attacking midfield player will get X amount for 10 goals, then a higher amount for 20 goals, etc.

Yup, it's exactly what he did at Barca and performance related pay makes sense for football clubs because on field success can have a big bearing on a club's revenue. It's the right business model.

It would be interesting to know how they work it but I would say that the bonuses should primarily be based around collective success. Incentivising individual players on, say, goals scored could drive less than optimal behaviour: you do not want a player shooting when he could pass to a team mate in a better position.

Bonuses should be driven by the team achieving targets; how much individual players get might then be tied to their base salary and number of performances.

True, but the structure already exists in the form of basic goal/assist bonuses which all clubs dish out.

He more than deserves his new contract, he proved me wrong completely towards the end of last season. Hoping his new deal will be announced soon.

Totally agree mate. I'd had enough of him at the end of the previous season and was very vocal in saying we should take what we can for him. I'm glad he proved me wrong and have to say he won us the league in the end.

What does a defensive midfielder get.

Yep goal bonuses can be counter productive and are often avoided. No idea what city do.

Hang on. Why on earth would Edin sign a new contract without a better salary?

There must be big big bonuses on offer. Fair enough. He deserves it.

All the pre - Soriano contracts that are being renegotiated are being renegotiated downwards as far as basic salary goes, with big bonuses based on tangible success and performances.

I read that somehwere else. I'd hazard a guess that that's a FFP dodge.

It also makes our players easier to sell. If we bench our surplus, they won't satisfy their performance/appearance bonuses. Less incentive to stay and run out their contracts.

Agree 100%. As in other walks of life, a poorly designed incentive plan will encourage the wrong behaviours.
