On the subject of Hydrogen. I too thought it the future of motoring. Yet the more i read, the more i just cannot see it happening. The first and most major obstacle is producing hydrogen cheaply enough. However, crack that and it would have every chance.
Storage, distribution and refueling for transport are manageable. Even "in car storage" isn't more dangerous than petrol i believe.
I think the biggest problem is advances in EV battery tech. We are looking at 600 mile EV ranges just next year. (500 mile range is already here) Add the new "fire safe-none runaway" battery tech coming, and it would make battery EV's the safest of all fuel options. You will see in the next year or so, EV's designed for towing. As always, it will start at the top end, but filter down soon enough.
By 2030 it is expected that 900-1000 miles will be possible. EV stations and public/street charge points will have matured. As the switch over to EV's progresses, petrol stations will slowly reduce. They are not the right shape/format to convert to electric charging. Meaning less stations to convert to Hydrogen even if they can make it cheaper. Then there are the people who cannot wait 15 mins to charge and EV. Hydrogen refilling isn't that quick either. Most people like the clean way EV plugs just click in. No smells/danger etc.
And from my reading, the above all seems to be the case why many companies are now dropping any further research in Hydrogen for transport. There may be some interest in replacing Natural gas with Hydrogen, but even that seems to be unable to overcome distribution problems. It was muted to just use the existing gas pipes, but that has been shown to be unfeasible. Hydrogen might still have role in heavy industry though. But who knows...
