30-40mil for a defender from Portugal is madness
Pepe and Ricardo Carvalho both cost about £30m each and I don't think anyone had any regrets over them.

Its easy to pull out the odd cases where it has came off
How many centerbacks do you think have been sold for £30m from Portugal? i can't think of any others

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

Carvalho, Thuram, Pepe, Nesta, Ferdinand, Thiago Silva, and Marquinhos are the only £20m+ centre backs in history I can think of and all of them were big successes, except Marquinhos (too soon to tell) who is still only 19 and a long-term investment.

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

To be fair, he said defenders so Coentrao would be included. Although, outside of him I couldn't think of any others.

David Luiz has arguable not succeeded, but hardly flopped either and is expected to be sold for what he cost or even a profit. He's probably the closest I can think of to a £20m+ CB flop

They were European champions, not just potential

Do you know if this deal is on or off LC?

I don't believe Pepe was a european champion, I think he was in an incredibly similar position to Mangala.

I've also remember the actual best flop of a £20m+ CB, Diname Chygrinsky (or something like that). Barca bought him for £25m off Shakhtar and I don't think he ever played for them. None the less, expensive CB's are usually pretty reliable

I don't know anything much except someone who told me the price could be under £30m, but a few credible journalists (including maybe the most well connected at City, Simon Mullock) and others think it's very likely.

Even though I'll be glad if we sign Mangala, I'm even more excited by the prospect of Fernando joining. That guy is a brilliant player.
