Carvalho, Thuram, Pepe, Nesta, Ferdinand, Thiago Silva, and Marquinhos are the only £20m+ centre backs in history I can think of and all of them were big successes, except Marquinhos (too soon to tell) who is still only 19 and a long-term investment.

Do you know if this deal is on or off LC?

I don't know anything much except someone who told me the price could be under £30m, but a few credible journalists (including maybe the most well connected at City, Simon Mullock) and others think it's very likely.

Thanks

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

Overrated and too expensive. I still believe Jan Vertonghen or Thomas Vermaelen would be better value for money. The fact they play with Vincent Kompany for the Belgium is an added bonus. They also have Premier League and Champions League experience, so surely this must make them suitable targets in the summer...

Lescott was over 20m, as was Chygrynskiy, David Luiz and Mascherano. None of which could be hailed big successes.

Vermaelan? He has been average at Arsenal for the past few season now, Everton tore him a new one the other week.

Vertonghen's lack pace would get destroyed in our high line, he gets recognition because he is a decent ball playing defender but apart form that his defensive ability is to be questioned big time.

His post was about value for money and he's spot on mate.

We could get either of those for under 15m. Both are prem proven and adapted.

Mangala is neither and would cost 30m+.

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

Neither Vertonghen or Vermalean would be good enough for the defensive setup we want to utilise.

Too slow and immobile.
Both have got basically all of their praise from being good ball playing defenders who score the odd screamer.

The CB's that we need are for example Mangala, Ramos, Pepe and Thiago Silva. Mangala is the youngest on that list and also the only one available.

If we wanted players who weren't slow and immobile why did we get MDM?

-- Sun Apr 20, 2014 9:48 pm --

Vertonghan for less than 15 million? Levy would just say LOL then put the phone down.

Considering they signed him for 10m, I doubt it.

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

Considering Levy loves to rinse a club for as much as humanly possible(4 million for Jamie O'Hara, 9 million for their 4th choice centre back), he's one of the first names on the team sheet and vice captain I'd be suprised if we got him for 25 million.
