Re: Eliaquim Mangala

The earliest he possibly would have arrived was Monday, as I understand the WC protocol ... so he has missed a whole four days of preseason training with the squad so far. Not ideal but hardly a critical issue in the grand scheme o things.

Just as long as he doesn't miss a whole season...

Hope he lives up to the hype

We've already seen that he's signed, that mcfc vid was leaked on purpose. He'ss not been linked to any other team recently either. Do people think that we wouldn't have snapped up another like Benatia by now?

To reply to you last sentence, he isn't worth his fee and he's not a world class CB. He's two years away from elite level imo.

What we have bought is a player who's rapid and good at last ditch challenges who can play the ball nicely. He's very similar to his fellow country man Varane. Our style makes us susceptible to counters and route one over the top balls, we welcome Mangalas speed to make that vital last ditch challenge (whom to his credit, Skrytel is a fine example of this attribute, fantastic at last ditch challenges, fair dues cos I can't stand him).

The problem with Mangala is he does fall asleep positionally. He will be coached and marshalled out of this, Kompany will lead him well.

Our backline will always leak goals due to style of play but what we have in Mangala is somebody who can track back and keep up with 99% of strikers.

I personally rate him but wanted Benatia as he was one of the best CBs of last season and the best in Serie A, however I trust Txiki wholeheartedly and if we've stumped up big for a promising young CB that Vieira himself recommends then I'll be happy. From the managerial change to last summer's business he's been on the money, Jovetic will leave us for top dollar one day if he goes. Fernandinho, we need no words, Negredo and Navas both exceptional at spells.

We are solid now, our backline with Clichy in it is truly rapid comparing to most teams. I like Clichy and Mangala, Kolarov and DeMichellis as pairings.
Totally agree with you!

The league starts again in 9 days. He didn't get a game for France and has been on holiday for a few weeks boozing and whatever else so he will be weeks away from match fitness. Every single day this drags on is critical.

My only concern is his fitness. As long as he's been keeping himself tip top whilst the wait. He will be a step away from match fit but coaching is vital at the back. We should start with DeMichellis if possible and coach Mangala steadily and bring into the team when he's ready. We have a tough start so we can't afford slip ups. DeMichellis had a fine end to the season and deserves to start. He's come a long way from the shambles he was at the start.

I agree....this guy needs to be training with the squad....I think its shocking that we've been talking with Mangala/Porto/3rd parties since Jan for his signing and its still dragging on almost to the start of the season....We must also remember that we're not talking about a player with years of experience...This is a young guy that is still developing into a world class CB and will need time to settle into his new role and learn how to play with his new teammates.....training with the squad goes along way to help that take shape if we want him ready for the season..this is now dragging on so much that he wont be ready for Newcastle and it could be a number of weeks before he is ready......we have some big games at the start of the season....having him up to speed would be a massive help!

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

It would be nice to have in the team straight away if he arrives, but let's not forget we do have a Premiership winning partnership with Kompany and Dem' still with us. It would be interesting to know why it has taken so long to get this done, but I am sure it will happen.

Porto defend in the same way we do .. Mangala won't need to be coached .. he'll slot in perfectly.
