I can't see any scenario where Pinto da Costa lets Mangala leave for only £20m. This guy has been fleecing top clubs for years and Mangala has a lot of clubs on his trail.

We'll be lucky if we get the price down to £30m, IMO.

If we DID get him for £20m, Txiki is even better than I thought.
Absolutely. The £20m pricetag in that article seriously damages what little credibility it had. Every penny less than his release cause will be a battle, the only way I can see us getting him for significantly less is if we bundle it in with paying in full for Fernando (and even then it would be nowhere near £20m)

Don't know about the £20 mil tag but could it be that we backed off triggering the release clause and taking Fernando as well in January, with an agreement for a reduced price in the summer. With them still in the Europa and chasing a champions league place I could see that being worthwhile to them.

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

If we can get both him and Fernando for 40 million quid, that'd be pretty good business.

It sounded like we could have got both for about 50m in January so yes £40m wouldn't be bad and if Fernando now has a 15 mil release clause then that would be £25 mil for Mangala so maybe these £20 mil for him aren't that far out.

As per Fernandinho, we just shouldn't get hung up on the price. Lets say we can't even get it down to 30, 40m is the final figure. 40 million and he turns out to be the worlds best centre half for the next ten years?

Alternatively we could buy a new Demichellis every year..

Fernandinho was Shaktar best player in the CL, and it was guatanteed that he will improve the team, but I am not sure if Mangala will justify even the 20m pound or improve the team.

Didn't stop plenty on this forum complaining incessantly about his price being too high. There were no guarantees with Fern just like there aren't with Mangala, we just have to trust that Txiki and co know enough about them to justify whatever money we're handing over.

Yes, I think we have to trust Txiki, and on the evidence of last summer I think we can. Ferna and Jesus arrived very early on in the summer window, and that was because we'd - I mean Txiki had of course - been working on the transfers since January. They both filled an obvious place in the squad and team. Jesus was very reasonably priced. We don't actually know how much Ferna cost, but he started well and has got better with every game so that he's now one of our "world class" spine and of fundamental importance in the way we play. There were those who thought we'd bought the wrong player - Paulinho was put forward as the better player because he got in the Brazil team - and those who thought we'd paid "way over the top" for him and what a daft claim that seems now. Then we got the beast and Jovetic - players of obvious quality at reasonable prices - and MDM came for £3 million at a time when we hardly had a CB with two functioning legs! He's had his wobbles but I don't know what we'd have done without him. So let's wait and see who comes and trust Txiki to look after the money!

Re: Eliaquim Mangala

I remember listening to some podcast earlier in the season that said clubs who failed to make the latter stages of the CL would be unlikely to drive a hard bargain when negotiating the inevitable sale of their players, be that in the January or summer window. I seem to recall them saying the Portuguese clubs, in particular, would be quite susceptible.
