It was a Roman salute done knowing it would be taken for a nazi salute to whip up controversy and fob it off as "lefties complaining over nothing" and take the news inches away from other things.

The roman salute is the nazi salute. He know what he is doing or is off on face on drugs, there is no reason to include the aggressive whip of the arm.

The Bellamy salute is the commonly used salute in the US, which has an underarm falm facing upwards gesture.

If, and this is an extreme example that even Trump won't go near. He sent troops to the border and ordered they shoot migrants trying to get in killing hundreds he couldn't be prosecuted for it.

For the record I dont think he's doing a Nazi salute. I think its a poorly judged ( maybe intentionally to whip up controversy ) attempt at a Roman Salute.

Where do you think the Nazi’s modelled their salute from? The US used to use it as well until around 1940. They dropped it for that very reason.

This attempt to drive a distinction between a Roman Salute and the Nazi Salute is… to put it delicately… complete fucking bollocks.

The straight armed salute was misattributed to the Romans, there’s no evidence they did it. That misattribution was picked up by Mussolini who regularly used evocations of Ancient Rome as part of his nationalist imagery. Mussolini was very literally attempting to copy what he saw as Roman culture. The Nazis then picked it up and put their own spin on it.

If we’re sat here debating the difference between iterations of what is fundamentally the same gesture then we might as well fucking give up. He could have goose-stepped around for ten minutes denouncing the Jews and people would still be claiming he’s just a bit socially awkward.
