England Squad (merged with Jesse Lingard thread)

Friday v Estonia

Monday v Lithuania

Apparently Rooney has missed training due to injury and is a doubt...

Funnily enough the TT said this week he would like to see Rooney rested and low and behold he gets a knock

Mind you he is shite but the Rags seem to think he does a job for them and the rest may help their cause in that respect.

Rooney should not really get near the team if Kane and Sturridge are fit. He is a relic from the tarnished "Golden Generation" and should be put out to pasture with the rest of those under-achieving, egocentric has-beens.

On current form Vardy and Walcott should be the 1st 2 strikers.

Hopefully he's out for both games and England can play better players. The trouble is, without Rooney there isn't anyone to lead the side. They're all largely young players who lack that leadership. As shite as Rooney is, he does have the winning mentality.

Charles Joseph John Hart?

Ha captained his club last Saturday, so there's no reason he can't follow in the footsteps of the great Frank Swift.

I already mentioned Hart previously but my post was in response to whether we'd prefer an outfield captain. I'd go with Hart without question. He's the most articulate player in the England side, has won more than most of them and been through thick and thin. He's never anything but respectful about other players and clubs and would have been my choice over Rooney because I can't see Rooney being in the side for the next WC and would have been building a team after the dismal effort in Brazil, that was aiming to do well at the 2018 WC. Instead Hodgson picked Rooney and therefore has to play him despite the abundance of attacking midfield and forward options that are emerging who can likely force Rooney out of the team. If Sturridge stays fit and Kane keeps improving then why would you pick Rooney? Barkley is a better no.10 and you also have the likes of Sterling, Walcott, Oxlade etc that can all play across the 3 in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

If you wanted an outfield captain, then there isn't anyone other than Rooney that can be a certain starter and has the leadership capabilities.

To be fair to Hodgson, it is hard to build towards 2018 right now, especially pick a captain for it, with players emerging seemingly out of nowhere in short spaces of time, I think it would be impossible to name the squad for the 2018 WC right now. I mean Harry Kane was nowhere near the Tottenham side at the start of last season, start of this season he's got the No.10 shirt, main striker, vice captain and linked with a £40m move to Utd. Much the same with players like Berahino, Barkley, Lambert (albeit short lived) etc.

For all we know we might have some of our own youngsters lining up for England at that WC, so I think its best just to focus on the Euros for now, plus i'm hoping that Hodgson will be gone well before the 2018 WC and that an actual decent manager replaces him.

Cahill captain? another who shouldn't even be in this England team...He's been awful so far this season. Scott Dann should have been given a chance in his place.

And Hart or Jagielka should be captain

I don't think Jagielka should be in the England side. He's not got the pace to cope at the top level and his reading of the game is decent but not top quality. The fact he's in the side is just testament to how weak we are in terms of quality. He's being pushed by rag defenders adnd a 21yr old John Stones!

Don't be fair to Hodgson, he's had enough fairness for not being sacked after the WC efforts. He wanted Gerrard and Lampard to play on rather than retire, he's clueless. Hart should have been captain, by making Rooney captain he can't drop him but he's shown this season how out of touch he is. He was a brute at 16 and was a top player for ten years but it's caught up with him in recent times. Making him captain was constraining Hodgsons ability to pick his best side. Hart is likely to be there for the next two major tournaments. I'd argue strongly that Rooney won't be and if he stays in current form we'll experience the same results at the Euros as we did at the WC. Yes there are lots of young players in sporadic form but I would have given Hart the captaincy and picked Rooney in the squad and built for the WC allowing the Euros to be a stepping stone. We're not going to win the Euro's so it's a chance to just develop tournament experience.
