England v Brazil | Friendly | Match Thread

I’m no fan of Southgate and it was a dreadful match last night. But we were missing Saka, Kane, Shaw and Walker (for large parts) last night. They’re all key players for England and we’re bound to look a bit blunt without the record scorer - who whether you like him or not has been great for England recently and is undoubtedly one of the best in the world.

Southgate will be in charge in the summer and he will continue to pick his chums like Maguire, who in fairness have done decent in an England shirt on the whole. There’s no point panicking at this stage but if we don’t go one step further and win it this year its surely then time to roll the dice on the manager front.

Its not fucking hard though unless you are southgate, with the players he has presently

4-3-3 possesion based and pressing attack

‐---------------------Pickford--------------------
walker---stones----mcguire---gomez
--------------------------rice-----------------------
---------------foden--------bellingham----
-----palmer-----watkins-------gordon---

Both Phil and Jude track back and are good at recovering the ball so 2 DM are no needed, plus stones can drop in alongside rice when we are pressing forward, while walker and gomez are capable in a 3 or covering CB if needed.

If Saka and Grealish were fit and kane avalable they replace the front 3 as first choice

U can't win big international games if you have players on the pitch unable to make simple passes and keep the ball. England desperately need a number 6. Rice is an 8 he's an emergency 6 but so much better playing at 8 he's not a player to keep the ball moving dictate play or be a deep lying playmaker. You can't have players like Connor Gallagher in your team how many times did he just kick the ball out of play last night? He ran around like a headless chicken and brazil just played around him. I'm all for pressing but it has to be done in the right times and zones. Chilwell is also woeful in possession and defending same as Maguire. So as much as people say this is the best England team/squad in 50 years they are still miles off being a great international team. And don't even get me on to the clown picking the team and tactics!!! The quicker he rocks up at the old toilet the better hopefully before the euros.

The sven lot were a much better squad than this lot especially in defence. The manager is also at a gets sacked at a championship club level.

Pep but even someone like him needs a time and will not be an immediate impact for national team atleast in early days.
Don't believe he would, he has the basis of a team with the City players in the squad there are plenty of others in the squad who play for clubs who attempt the Pep way His biggest issue would be the GK. The difference between Pep and the clown is he spends time creating a plan for the game this is always an adaption of his philosophy whereas the clown who has one way and doesn't adapt anything

I just find the way England play to be utterly negative and boring. Is that the fault of the players, or something else?

I don't think it's the players

Southgate doesn't seem to adjust game plan for opponents. Not that you need to deviate from what you do too much but you still have to make little adjustments. At City we have a style of play and then Pep makes adjustments within that framework based on who we play.

England just seem to have one extremely rigid style of play which is fine when coming up against inferior players. Doesn't work so well against similar level teams with a coach that knows how to make little adjustments ti get the upper hand. Then you start seeing now rigid and boring England are because Southgate has no tactical variation.

Apart from McGuire that team with first choice front three almost picks it self Foden and Bellingham next to each other are the first names on the team sheet Do have doubts about Pickford though

Not a pickford fan(he's wank tbf), but ramsdales confidence must be shot a little with his sidelining by arteta and with Pope out not much choice.

As for McGuire, there is a strong case to promote Braithwaite, however Southgate won't drop slabhead so threw him in as srandard

Well people assume Pep would want to implement his own style, which might not work well given the time you get available at international level

But thats underestimating Pep and assuming he only knows his way. He has his way because he can at clubs, but this is a football genius, I'm certain he would go into an international team and tournament with a much more suitable and realistic plan to fit it. He would already understand that he can't do what he does at club level.
