Southgate played him in the first two matches, so he clearly came into the tournament as first choice. He didn't have great games, and arguably isn't as suited to playing as part of a detached front three as Rashford, Sancho and Saka. Phil has played nearly all his games surrounded by passing options, so it's not a surprise that's not quite his game.

I suspect that Foden would have come on in the last game, if it wasn't for the yellow card.
Stop talking sense mate.

But he's hardly played. City have had three or four players in every game, more than twice what United have had. Did Southgate just take Rashford so his face appears on the photos to appease the legions of United fans out there?
he took him because sir marcus could not be left at home for all kind of reasons that are not just playing football

Foden is clearly a great player.
Better on the left than the right. Sterling is in the best form he's every been in for England and is the first name on the team sheet. Unfortunately that's why Foden has seen less game time.

I think Saka and Sancho have both done decent jobs on the right.

The most shocking person who keeps getting dropped is Grealish. He should start every game.

If you're correct about the England team set up not suiting Phil,(and I think you may be right) it doesn't bode well for his immediate international future.

After all,why change a successful formula?

Of course he's correct. Southgate hasn't conceeded a goal and is within touching distance of immortality. If anybody seriously thinks he is making any decisions for any other reason than footballing ones then they have the IQ of an underdeveloped koala bear.

Agree completely.

But then for years we complained that players were in the England team, out of position, and not able to play their "natural game". Phil will get chances, and it's up to him to show he can adapt, but I don't expect Southgate to be changing a team that's doing well to accommode him.

After his 5 year yellow card ban finishes and waistcoat wanker has been moved upstairs??

Sorry mate, I’m usually in your side of the fence on here but me wanting Foden to play has fuck all to do with being a Bertie.
It’s a bit of a shit take tbh.
Mate, I'm not having a go at you. I want Foden to play too and think he's easily good enough.

But for people to suggest that is because he plays for City, that's where the madness starts for me.
