We waste a player by having Rice in the team, he brings nothing,we could play a mobile midfielder insteadThat’s been a common theme
How many clear cut chances do we actually make for Kane? Barely any
He drops deep and sets off the wide players with good passes but there’s nobody in the box after that. That’s where he needs to be.
That’s why Foden needs to play in that role for England, behind Kane. He’s the one with the quality to unlock defences or pull them out of shape. Otherwise you’re stuck with Rice, Bellingham, and Henderson then nobody to bridge that gap between them and Kane, so that forces him to come deep too often.
We don’t need those 3 midfielders on. Get one one off, put Foden infront of the other 2 and then you can play Grealish/Rashford/Sterling on that left where Phil was.
Ironically enough, the way the French set up would be absolutely perfect for England. Foden is your Griezmann, basically a free role. If England need to know how to get the best out of their players and the system to do so, it was right there in front of you last night in plain sight, just it was the other team.

Being in control of possesion is only relevant if you utilise that possesion well. Although Mbappe was kept quiet, France still scored two goals from open play. As such, they were the better team and deserved to progress to the semis.England had 30% more possession than France. England were rather more in control than Griezman.

Yep, bad decision, but we still didn't score a goal from open play. France scored two - so it would be a bit of a stretch to suggest we did enough to win that match.
His last ever World Cup appearance & he did himself proud against a guy that can catch pigeonsSad to see us bow out but the bottom line is you simply cannot miss a penalty in a WC quarter final.
Thought Walker had a very impressive game keeping Mbappe quiet.
To be fair we’ve not had many problems opening teams up in Europe apart from in the final against a domestic rivalFrom watching this World Cup having possession and trying to break teams down resulted in fancied teams crashing out. Brazil, Portugal and England came a cropper with slow ponderous play. Flip that and the likes of Croatia, Tunisia suckering teams and defending for their lives.
Probably why City haven’t won the champions league yet, we can accumulate enough points to win the league with possession football. However one off games where it’s win or bust we don’t quite get over the line.
