England V Italy, Quarter Final 2012 (merged)

I didn't watch the match, but it was interesting Zonal pointed out Wooney as a main culprit.

Did we do well to get to the quarters from the group we were in? No, should never have been an issue
Did we make an average Italian side look like world beaters? Yes

Hope we have not papered over the cracks by believing we have found our level. We have no creative flare, we rely on an attack that managed only 6 shots on target in last seasons derbies and believe that a big heart and passion are the most important traits for our team.

Are we really restricted to being the plucky losers like Ireland and Scotland of years gone by. By bolstering our team with positive accolades that are not about the skill on the pitch the media are limiting our aspirations and Roy will take us further down the road of footballing oblivion.

Who are the players we can turn to?
We need a Silva or a Modric type..... Do not see one out there
We need a strike force to worry the opposition and therefore shape their tactics. (yeah, right)

The ox ....... Great potential but more of the same type that we have relied on in the past
Wiltshire........ Great player but injury may impact. Is he as creative a player as we need?
........ Erm.......... Struggle to see even one, let alone a team of future players that will challenge the world elite

Please someone, give me hope, show me an England eleven that
A. I can put faith In in the future
B. Roy would actually pick

Truth is, QF is just about the level and has been for a long time. Top 8 in Europe and top 12 maybe in the world. A few good players sometimes, a good manager now and then, but that doesn't change the basics.

Reaching the QF was about what to expect.

Team clearly needs change in a lot of areas over the next two years though ....
I agree on the whole. We're not shit, we're okay with some quality (we were shit for an hour last night). We were quite a bit better between 2003-2006 but now we're way down on that quality but still an okay team. Italy were better than us all over the pitch and were also fitter, faster and stronger. I would rate us around 12th in the world, which is still good.

Over the next two years there will be little change because other than Wilshire we have the same sort of players that we have had for years. The changes need to start now but we wont see the fruition of them for another ten years or so. St George's Park is being built and the development of youth footy in England needs to change.

Given our best hope after the first 25 mins or so was pens I found it quite surprising that of the 3 subs brought on none of them took a penalty. I also thought we lost some bite (as well as a good penalty taker) when Jimmy Milner was taken off - gievn we lost the midfield battle all night Milner going off and young staying on wasn't the best move for me

Only time Young played like his usual Utd self was when he screamed like a baby and got the italian booked who now misses the semi final yet replays show he wasnt touched.

Take away all the conning he does for Utd, which is a tactic they use and refs fall for it every week, and he is a very limited player.

Rooney shouldnt have been taken. Clearly not fit. Friendlies leading up to the tourement- choose your front men, stick with it and get them bedded in.

And FFS, why take Milner off. He was the only 1 putting crosses in last night. We take him off, stick carroll on and no one to cross the ball is on the pitch. Everyone knows Parkers fucked after 70 mins, so could have put Milner in centre midfield but as he was off, fking henderson.

English players who weren't actually shit during the tournament...

Hart
Terry
Johnson (Richards is still better!)
Lescott

I think that's about it.

I think Johnson's been piss poor, apart from his last ditch block last night. The amount of times he's played everyone onside, and been completely out of sync with the rest of the back four just shows how thick he is.

ALL OF THIS

A Croatian guy in our Frankfurt office told me this morning that he thought we were ok

We do tend to over-criticise our own team but this said, I thought we were v.poor with the wrong substitutions made

Played for a draw and had no idea
