He actually played well today. For me one of three players who did (Foden, Saka, Mainoo).

Was he as brilliant as he regularly is for City? No.

But he also doesn’t have anywhere near the same level of team around him or a decent manager, and it was the first time playing in the setup on the tournament. It doesn’t help that many of the players around him play for themselves, not the team, which is completely different to what Phil is used to at club level, where performances like that would get you benched in a hurry.

And, once more, his teammates were largely either afraid to give him the ball in dangerous positions or, in the case of Bellingham, seemingly refused to do so for their own reasons. I lost count the number of times Phil was calling for the ball in space and was ignored. It happens with Rice, Saka, Mainoo, Bellingham, and Konsa. Only Stones, Walker, and Kane even tried. I spoke earlier in the thread about why I think that is (mostly because they haven’t played with him enough to be confident he is going to make something happen or recycle possession, rather than lose the ball, if they do). And I don’t think the way Bellingham plays in that same position helps (they have seen how bad playing a ball to him with his back to goal on the edge of the opposition box can go).

Beyond all that, he was one of the few players with any composure on the ball and was directing players as to what to do with the ball throughout the match. He was the one actually running the game, while Kane and Bellingham ambled around the box, and Rice hid away. Mainoo and Saka were the other ones consistently contributing.

I really don’t understand where the “Foden had a poor game” analysis is coming from, especially compared to his attacking partners.
Spot on. Agree with Mainoo and Saka too. Thought Mainoo showed some balls and was progressive. Rice was a complete shithouse as normal. I saw him ignore line splitting passes so often. Just to go back or sideways.

We're through, that's all that matters at this stage. Fancy us to get to the final now.

Saka the best player on the pitch by a country mile.

Spot on about rice and a few times he does actually see a pass and try it, he always yames two seconds too long, which makes the opposition see his attempt and the recipient is no longer in enough room anymore

The thing what makes Rodri so good is not his actual passing ability, which is good very anyway, but it's not like he's some KDB level of passer, it's his impeccable timing of knowing when to make the pass. Nothing is too rushed or too delayed, he knows exactly went to release it and who to, which lets the team flow.

It's actually an insult that people have tried to compare them.

Performance better than it has been, still not as good as I think they can play. Not much chemistry between the forward players. Saka had a good game though, and I saw Mainoo receive the ball from defence and turn on it on more than one occasion, which is what I've been desperate for him to do.

Good penalties all round, my heart broke for Akanji who hasn't put a foot wrong.

And I tell you what, Johnny Stones might not have been at his sparkling best this tournament, but there's no-one else I'd rather have partnering first Guehi and then Konsa. They're good players but inexperienced at this level and you can tell how much of a calming, supportive influence Stonesy is.

The draw didn't favour Southgate though. That only happened because France and Belgium didn't top their group like most thought they would.
Irrespective of who should or shouldn't have won their groups, he's been very lucky yet again with how its panned out, and he's yet to take advantage of it

How overrated is Saka tho.

Not at all, judging by his performance tonight. We’ve all moaned about Foden playing a position we know he’s not best at but has played before. Saka did similar tonight and was our best player.

That’s not a dig at Foden but any England fan having a go at Saka needs their eyes tested, he was great tonight. Kane, though, is a different matter…
