England v Ukraine - Sun 26th March 2023, 17:00

We're top of the group after 2 tricky-ish games - what more do people want?

I really don't understand why so many dislike Southgate, he's doing everything right in my book bar win a final. That said, of all of managers who've managed England, only one has ever done that before.

As I've said before, does that mean I want him at City after Pep? No, but I think he's doing a FAR better job than anyone has done before bar Sir Alf.

If he won every game 20-0, won every trophy going we'd still have some people complaining it should've been 30-0 and he's not won the Euros in Africa and that the 20-0 win in the WC final against Brazil was because they were drugged or something.

Just be thankful we've a manager who is improving the national team. We've not always qualified for tournaments but Southgate has taken us to finals and semis and I'm sure he will do it again.

It's just people that don't actually understand football and think they know it all because they play Fifa for a few hours every evening.

Yep spot on

Just the usual mob who constantly and will always moan about England

Even some admitting they don’t watch them nowdays and can’t stand England - yet here they are, each and every time on a England match forum.

All a shame really, when you consider what a very good side England are, fine not the most entertaining (although most international teams aren’t) but nevertheless we have a real exciting young bunch at the moment and they are delivering.
Seems only if they win a major trophy they might get a bit of praise - even then the moan brigade would be straight on their backs soon after, same for whoever is managing.

Totally agree.

International football is - like it or not - built on being slightly defensive and not conceding. It's not like a league where if you lose a game you can make it up next week. There's a lot less margin for error and I think Southgate has got a decent blend of defence/attack for international football. His record says that too.

Exactly, also for players they’re playing with others that they are not to used to week in week out like at club level, so they’re always going to be a bit more cautious and harder to gel

Another also, Most fans just watch England when it comes to international football - yet if they sat and watched most international sides - even the very best - Brazil , Argentina, Germany etc they are often bore fests saved by the odd individual brilliance every now and then.

Spot on. The teams you listed there make sure that the first priority is "not to lose" and build from there - exactly what we're doing. Over the years we've been charging forward, getting tired and then picked off. Thanks to Southgate copying Pep-ball, England now are defensively solid, keep possession and are picking teams off thanks to the likes of Kane and Saka.

I get the feeling that playing for England now is an honour and a lot of fun. You get the feeling the players must really enjoy playing for him.

Care to tell us which country you come from?

And England may not win any tournament but I think most will be content just to see us in quarters, semi's and finals. In the World Cup we lost by one goal in extra time to Croatia in 2018. A Croatia side that was at it's peak then. We lost on penalties against the Italians in the following Euros in the final, which is always a lottery. We then lost to France by one goal in the World Cup in a game where we were a match for them for anyone that has eyes and doesn't have an agenda. I'd say we're doing alright.
Sorry, but you have to be kidding. Southgate is an inept halfwit with no idea how to maximise the results from the players available to him.

I do wish against opposition like Ukraine he would take the leash off a little bit more. There was never any danger of them beating us on our own turf. But for Southgate, winning 2-0 gives us the same points as winning by 4 or 5 and he will always be a "job done" type, so we have to be okay with that. Also he annoys me with how long he takes to make changes. Why give Toney and Grealish less than 10 minutes? He should have been taking Maddison and Henderson or Bellingham off after 65 for them, and give them a chance to actually have an impact, although I do think Toney managed to do that still despite his limited time.

Still, it's nit-picking more than actual faults. He's done far better than anyone would have ever imagined when he took over the reigns.

Just did enough? They won at a canter. Clearly you have some sort of weird agenda.
No I don't have a weird agenda. It was just enough to beat a poor Ukraine side. Nothing exciting and not a totally shit performance either. I don't have England specs like you to wear at times.
