England wasting one of the most talented squads ever assembled on Southgate

I'm sure I heard he'd fallen out with some players. I guess like any other workplace if a person isn't liked in the group they soon fuck off, or in tango mans case don't join the squad.

It's because he's a mediocre manager who's level is Middlesbrough or the rags. He has the best young talent we've had in decades but still thinks fucking Henderson is the answer. Those pointing at his record in tournaments are talking bollocks. Germany and Italy were weaker than they've ever been. Even then he shit the bed against Italy when we were 1-0 up at home and had them on the ropes. Belgium wasted their best talent by employing another mediocre manager in Martinez. We're stuck with Southgate.

Indeed. Waistcoat is the same as the majority of past England managers, instead of trying out new players and new formations for these pointless friendlies, they pick the same eleven they would have picked had the game had more meaning to it. The reason for this cannot be a footballing one, so there simply has to be some kind of other incentive for the manager to pick basically the same players regardless of the significance of the fixture.


Footballing rivalry aside, most people would agree that Henderson just isn't any good. And yet he's Southgate's go-to man. Rashford does not have a footballing brain: he fails to think like a professional, he seems to go after personal glory all the time. I've seen him spurn so many chances because he's gone for the wrong option - instead of passing to a colleague in a better position to score he tries a 30-yard worldie that inevitably goes so wide it becomes a throw-in for the opposition.

If the common football fan can see all these things, why the fuck can't the man in the waistcoat?

Southgate has to pick a squad of players. He does so based on how those players are currently performing and how they've performed for England before. It's not surprising he calls up those who have been good for England in previous tournaments. Their experience does count. Henderson by all accounts is excellent behind the scenes. We might not like him, we might not rate him, but whenever people talk about him it's in a positive light. Whilst there shouldn't be a free place just on that, there's also the argument that there's no one else who can perform his role in midfield. The majority of English midfielders are attack minded. Phillips has ruled himself out based on performances.

We don't yet know if Southgate will continue with a 4-2-3-1. Bellingham's been used in a more advanced role for Real but could potentially be a box to box player alongside Rice. I'd like to see Foden-Bellingham-Rice in the midfield. But I also acknowledge that our back 4 needs more protection and having a more defensive player alongside Rice is possibly beneficial.

Rashford is in poor form, but form can change quickly. He's not starting for England unless we get loads of injuries and again, I don't know who else is worthy of a call up at the moment. Bowen, Palmer, Gordon are all in there. I don't feel like there are obvious choices sat at home as a result of this squad.

Barkley has been okay, nothing more. He's a standout player in a Luton side that otherwise play a direct brand of football. Stick him in a better team and I don't believe people would feel he should be in the squad. He doesn't have a previous tournament to point to and justify a call up at his age and at this moment in time.

Southgate has as much innovation as a dead dog. He can shuffle a squad, tweak a line here or there, but we always seem to end up with the same old stodge!
 
No England manager will please and every single squad announcement will be met with outrage. This will forever continue no matter who’s in charge.

Absolutely agree. My frustration with Southgate is that everything ends up on the cautious side despite the players we have available who can help us dominate.

Too many games where he's picked 3 centre-backs, 2 fullbacks as wingbacks, plus 2 defensive midfielders against teams that are nothing special.

Even when that works it's frustrating, because playing a more creative and attacking side would also probably work.
