I feel whenever a player goes to Chelsea, their careers grind to a halt. I know that’s not actually true but it just feels like they’re not interesting players anymore, they don’t shine. The last I can think of was Hazard (as in last time I noticed a Chelsea player shine, not the last signing).

Even though I know what you mean (we have had lots of big money players either be underwhelming or completely flop) we have had our fair share of very good buys. Rudiger for one, was an okay-ish player for much of his career and turned into an elite one at Chelsea. Thiago Silva has maintained his elite qualities. We seem to have a very good hit rate for defenders and midfielders. We just completely suck at getting attacking players to develop well or just keep up the level they showed before we signed them. It's more of a recent thing though, as in the last 5 years or so.

There is a good omen here though. Our previous signings from Benfica have all been massive hits. Ramires, Matic and David Luis (the first time).

No that's not what I meant, it's hard to explain. I know Chelsea have good players - brilliant players some of them, like the ones you mentioned - but they don't seem to have any aura about them.

We have KDB, Haaland etc. and other fans would have them in a heartbeat but the players you have just don't seem to have that identity about them. They just feel part of a pack at Chelsea and all merge into one once they join you.

It's not a slant (believe it or not) against you lot and I'm probably the only one to see it that way but if Enzo went to, say, Liverpool or Utd then their status would elevate immediately but I don't think that when a player goes to Chelsea. Could be because I have no affinity to Chelsea and Spurs/Arsenal fans might see it differently.

he was actually worth that and is the going rate if you look at the market. bellingham, pedri, rice etc all quoted above 100 mil. why should it be different for the biggest midfield talent from south america?

Fair enough. It probably is because we aren't challenging in anyway, and we haven't any transcendent player for a while since we sold Eden Hazard. But to be fair, I can't really think of a player at United or Arsenal that have aura you're talking about. Sure they have good players but no-one really transcends in the way perhaps KDB and Haaland do for City and maybe Salah and VVD used to do for Liverpool. I do get what you're saying though, and to be honest I would lean towards agreeing with you.

It's mad how much people are judging a player and making him out to be fantastic based on a few good games in the World Cup. Not to say he isn't good player and won't become an excellent one, but I can guarantee you that 90% of those making him out to be amazing hadn't seen him kick a ball a month ago.

I think he had a good World Cup and a decent season for Benfica - from what I’ve heard, but I don’t think that warrants a 100m+ transfer fee. Rice and Bellingham are proven talents in the top leagues. (Not that I agree with those fees either)

It’s an opinion, just like yours is.

Nkunku might be the exception, he’s a great signing in my view.

New owners seem to be spending a lot, will probably be similar if United/ Liverpool sell.

You're right, Hazard is the last one I can think of that you knew was going to be a pain in the arse whenever we played you. Then players like Costa and Fabregas had danger in them at all times. If you were signing a world-beating forward - Nkunku is one that pricked my attention admittedly but even then there's been enough false dawns attack-wise for you recently - then I might feel differently to be fair, I think it's just easy to group another midfielder (Enzo) in when they're not going to be game changing in an obvious way (KDB etc.)

Utd have Fernandes in that sense - somebody who you know can be a level above and is more often that not. Arsenal, I agree with you - their last one was Sanchez IMO.

proven talent is a myth. either you have the talent or not. for what it is worth Enzo has more or equal talent that both you have mentioned. infact half the teams in europe were scouting enzo before he moved to benfica including our own club. only diffence is rice and bellingham has english media hype.
