Yep, as saddleworth2 said his best / most edgy stuff was probably with cream. Seems to have spent forever in that sort of 'rock legend' category selling out the Albert hall to mums and dads.This, I always think of him as an upmarket Status Quo, he can obviously play but takes blues guitar to a safe boring level.
I'm not a guitarist, I do like Claptons music though agree that his solo stuff is a mixed bag, but a lot of the greats rated him, including Hendrix, so I would say yes. He was that good Harrison let him get off with his bird to force him into playing on his songs up until his death as payback. And now they are both playing together in the great amphitheatre in the sky RIP.
