Eric Clapton

In Cream he was untouchable. But this was largely down to Bruce (and Baker to an extent) he got extremely lucky with those 2 and has nothing of note before them or since. Doesn't deserve his status.

One of the most boring concerts I’ve ever been to, Stafford Bingley Hall sometime in the 1800s I think. Hello Old Friend is alright though in a slack, whimsical sort of way

Pedestrian,predictable and,whenever I've seen him,totally dis -interested.Saw him and Knopfler in a show together,no contest.
Eric plays the same twelve-note break whenever he gets the chance.A typical EelPie Island player who got very lucky and rode that luck until Hendrix blew in and put him back in his box.

I think he is a very good guitarist. Makes it look easy and plays the right notes at the right time.

Saw him in January doing a Ginger Baker tribute and he and his starry friends were excellent. Nile Rodgers nearly stole the show though.

It’s funny this thread being started because at the weekend I watched the Bob Dylan anniversary concert on Sky, lots of great musicians like Neil Young, Ronnie Wood, Sinead O’Connor (lol) but what really stood out for me was Eric doing ‘Don’t think twice, it’s alright’. It was absolutely fantastic stuff and you can see by Steve Cropper’s face behind him just how good it was.

Only on bluemoon - is Clapton really that good at playing guitar? Fuck me

Next week - Hamilton has a fast car is he really good at driving? can he reverse park?

Pmsl
Thank you miss the point, I never said he wasn't a good guitarist but he's been playing the same blues scale for 50 years and for some reason is regaled as the best player ever, my question was is he really deserving of that status ie. legend status ?
For me if you listen to albums and concerts by his contemporaries someone like Jeff Beck blows him away, Clapton has never strayed from his safe Blues playing he could never hope to emulate an album like Jeff Becks blow-by-blow.
Since the days of Cream Clapton has done nothing innovative. Well at least I can't think of anything except middle of the road music.

Not an RIP thread :)

Does he really deserve his Superstar status, is he really that good a guitarist ?

As a semi pro musician I've often wondered about this.

If you watch videos of other famous musicians like say Rick Wakeman, he can seemingly play anything very well, a real virtuoso.
But Clapton just keeps playing the same old pentatonic blues scale and gets tons of accolades.
Plus his records since about 1970 have been largely middle of the road pap.

I don't get it.

Is he really really that good a guitarist?

I never said he wasn't a good guitarist

Sort yourself out fella.
