Eric Clapton

He deserves naff all and I've been saying it for absolute years.

He plays like a robot and really needs someone else to create the magic in collabs, so he can riff off it. You can really hear the stark differences in actual talent and playing the guitar on the 'Journeyman' album with Robert Cray. I never bought another Clapton album after that.

I was utterly shocked!
I’ve not really delved into anything further past The Yardbirds and Cream, so I’d have always imagined he was what he’s regarded as by the music press.

He is good at what he does. Blues guitar, although personally I prefer others like BB King, Rory Gallagher. I saw him at the RAH last year and he is proficient but zero connection with the audience and you got the impression he was doing the least he could get away with. I enjoyed a lot of the stuff he did with Cream.
Same with me. I like his works with Cream but that's it.

No doubt Clapton is talented but since Cream he's not someone I've listened to as I find his stuff since Cream boring and predictable. I'm no expert on Clapton though and no doubt @OB1 will disagree.

If I can offer an analogy, I think Hendrix was as exciting as Alex Higgins, whilst Eric Clapton was/is as dull as Terry Griffiths. Old Slow hands; )

Clapton's a mixed bag and if you want rip roaring musical excitement, his solo stuff is not for you. He's not a big JJ Cale fan for nothing.

I do think he plays tasteful solos though.

When it comes to former Yardbirds, I'm very much a Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck kind of guy.

Eddie Van Halen rates Clapton and he knows a thing or two about playing the geetar.

To be fair to Clapton I think he made a conscious decision to move away from the guitar god 20 min solo type music in the early 70s. Most of his albums since then have been 'song based' (horrible phrase but you get my meaning!).

Interestingly Albert Lee (now there is a great guitarist) who toured with his band in the 1980s reckoned Clapton told him he never practiced between tours/recording sessions. He would just put his guitar away which he felt kept him fresh for when he picked it up again.

Oh dear

Has written an anti-mask/lockdown song for van morrison

Along the way is has made those old enough to remember his pro Enoch Powell racist rant from the 70s dredge it back up
