Eric Clapton

Case for the prosecution.

Playing the famous Beatles song.
Clapton is singing it. Mark Mann is playing the lead guitar bits between verses, he's doing it very well, sounds awesome. Killer tone.
Gets to the main lead guitar break and Clapton takes over, his tone is week as piss and it's quite a boring solo... I think Mark mann would've given a much more impressive solo.

Great stuff

Is this some kind of trap? Clapton played on the original and apparently Clapton's performance was ranked 42nd in Guitar World's 2008 list of the "100 Greatest Guitar Solos". Haven't checked if he replicated his original guitar solo here.
Yeah he played on the studio recording, but he couldn't replicate it live. Thats why I posted the video.

I wouldn't say he was untouchable, Hendrix pissed all over him.
But he was very good. Just since Cream he's been a bit meh.
Cream was fifty years ago.

I used to love Jimi, but whenever I try to listen nowadays I don't enjoy him as much. Technically a better gutarist but Clapton in Cream was unbelievable.. perhaps his whole high point was in those 2 years. But what a 2 years.

Not an RIP thread :)

Does he really deserve his Superstar status, is he really that good a guitarist ?

As a semi pro musician I've often wondered about this.

If you watch videos of other famous musicians like say Rick Wakeman, he can seemingly play anything very well, a real virtuoso.
But Clapton just keeps playing the same old pentatonic blues scale and gets tons of accolades.
Plus his records since about 1970 have been largely middle of the road pap.

I don't get it.

He deserves naff all and I've been saying it for absolute years.

He plays like a robot and really needs someone else to create the magic in collabs, so he can riff off it. You can really hear the stark differences in actual talent and playing the guitar on the 'Journeyman' album with Robert Cray. I never bought another Clapton album after that.

I was utterly shocked!

Yeah I agree mate.
He has a lot of fans but I just don't see the wonderment.
He definitely had it mid to end of the sixties though, maybe all that booze and heroin fucked his talent.

Irrespective of Clapton's merits or otherwise, he is beaten to a cocked hat by Peter Green, that is before he lost his mind.
BB King did not have much respect for 'white boy blues', but he said: "Peter Green makes me sweat".
That'll do.
Peter Green was hugely talented, sad what happened to him

And the way he stuck his cigarette in the strings at the headstock was cool.

And he was probably very pissed.

And I can't believe I am defending him as I really was never a fan but do listen to the whole of Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs - it really is good.
