I think you would have to come up with something tangible to convince me that it was a smart move as your post makes it look even more bizarre.Not really. The articles last year in the M(U)EN stated that the club wanted a similar fee to that paid to Valencia for Ferran Torres.
I don't think we turned down 10 million euros and bonuses just to keep him as 5th choice CB and 3rd choice RB for a year unless there was a long term aim behind it.
Probably more due to people seeing him play a bit more and realising he just wasn't suited to the PL or the way we play.He went from next best thing to overrated and awful overnight because he decided he wanted to go home.

Turning down that amount of money for a complete waste of space who was leaving this summer regardless was madness. We fucked up.
We had Stones, Dias, Laporte and Ake all ahead of him, so he was 5th choice really.The abuse he got for not renewing was over the top. He was a great 4th choice defender - way too good for that role. Thanks for the service.
