I don't think we turned down 10 million euros and bonuses just to keep him as 5th choice CB and 3rd choice RB for a year unless there was a long term aim behind it.

I think you would have to come up with something tangible to convince me that it was a smart move as your post makes it look even more bizarre.

Turning down that amount of money for a complete waste of space who was leaving this summer regardless was madness. We fucked up.

How many times do we see fans banging on about how we dont get enough cash in for the players we sell. This time we held out and forced the issue and he ends up going on a free. Its easy to say in hindsight that we f'd up. It is what it is, we should have took the money but then if he had started playing regular in the first team the fans would have been moaning at the fee.
 
The abuse he got for not renewing was over the top. He was a great 4th choice defender - way too good for that role. Thanks for the service.
