ESPN commentators

The commentary was bizarre but for me what was worse than that was the TV director's performance with the constant use of the wide angle camera while the game was being played...

They had about 6 cameras (2 in the stand, 1 on the halfway line, 1 behind the goal and two on the touchline) but only used the 1 apart from for replays. It made it really boring to look at and you'd think that they'd at least look at how it's done here to get the basics right. Stuff like showing a close up of anyone taking a free kick or cut to a pitchside shot when the play is near the camera... The director has a huge influence on the "show" and he along with the two blokes having a very poorly informed chit chat in the stand, they just sapped the life out of it as a TV experience.

Mind you there are a lot of countries that do this so it's hardly just the Yanks who are clueless. It makes you really appreciate the coverage we get here.

"heres the Belgium, Vincent Kompany. On the ball is the Slovakin Weiss. Now the English number one Joe Hart has the ball."

Holy crap, they mentioned every nationality last night!

transfer window?
We don't have a transfer window per se over here. It works different as the league wouldn't survive with a pure transfer window.

Two quick things, Nige definitely did break Holden's leg, it was in a March friendly before the World Cup. And the commentator did not say he was going to have "stern words" with Clichy, he said he was going to have them with the City management for allowing him to play on. The reason why he said that is because his own career was cut short due to multiple concussions. You have to remember as at least one person has pointed out thus far, these guys are geared toward an American audience so they use terminology that are relevant to the American sports fan.

If that's the terminology needed for an american sports fan.....

For the Rooney lob goal, the ESPN commentator said, "And there's the scoop, now where do you want your ice cream?"

Thought it was quite funny.

In the US, ESPN has some really awful commentators. The best paid ones are really good, but the lesser ones like this blond twerp are horrible.

It's not just in 'soccer' but American football also. ESPN is known for having the worst.
