Prefacing this with the fact that I don’t get to games as often as I’d like, but do sing when I’m there, I’d say things are STALE.
We have more songs about players who are no longer here than play in every game!
People might actually know the songs, but Yaya/Kolo? Sergio? Zaba? Really???
It’s nice to have a few chants for players who do something decent in a game, like “Oh, Kevin De Bruyne,” but I think the biggest issues are the lack of stirring team chants.
Bluemoon doesn’t stir me, unless the whole ground is singing it and it’s a big game where we just scored a vital goal. What’s that, once or twice per season?!
Personally, I think the City version of “Hey Jude” is THE BEST in game chant, followed closely by “WNRH.” Think about what they have in common and the answer states you in the face!
And, while it’s nice to have a “Kippax” section as an homage, and it helps surround the opposition fans, it splits our most vociferous fans, and they’re at the other end of the field from the only other singers in the North Stand. On TV, that sounds like TWO versions of the same song being sung slightly off the beat. Sound vs distance usually causes destructive, not constructive, interference!
I know there are enough thoughts out there regarding who should be where, but even if we had every singer in the exact right location for maximum volume and atmosphere, it wouldn’t matter that much given the dire song portfolio dragged out, kicking and screaming, every game!
One last observation would be that when I hear brilliant atmospheres in other stadia, IT IS NOT ABOUT THE WORDS, BUT THE SOUND! Often, this is based on some clapping cadence, or simply a short sharp “sound” chant that has a beginning and an end. Most of what we hear at the Etihad peters out after a brief, one verse, crescendo….
Again, it’s easy to throw bombs from the cheap seats, which in my case is unfortunately often on the couch or in a hotel room, but these are my personal observations after growing up at Maine Road and having done my seasons at the Etihad.
- More current player chants
- Retire some old player chants
- Better distribution of new songs
- More City/Team songs
- More clapping or “sound” songs that are easy to learn and add volume to the chant!
All that said, there has been nothing better than the Etihad against Hamburg or Liverpool after Sané’s winner and thereafter.
The Etihad definitely has the ability to give you goosebumps when it’s alive. The problem is we are, by nature, a fan base that likes to actually WATCH THE GAME, because we are seeing the best football in the world. Additionally, our type of football rarely generates the energy the crowd sometimes needs to get out of their seats and cheer.
Perhaps, especially for those of us who lived the 44 years of hurt, we now feel old and spoilt by the last decade of brilliance?
My hat is off to those of you who always represent on the road. It’s always a bright spot watching City away when you hear a few thousand City fans making so much noise and cheering on the lads. Bravo!
