Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

I agree. We’ve lost our imagination with new chants and just rehash old football chants or straight up pinch them from big Liverpool and United songs (Zinchenko’s last season was a straight steal from ‘Bobby’ Firmino’s and Alvarez’s is a straight steal from ‘Georgie’ Best’s).

Be imaginative. Be original.

Also the biggest thing for me is that we need some new City songs. Nobody ever makes up new City songs anymore. City songs are the songs that are sung around the stadium. We’ve not had an new one for about a quarter of a century.

Also a lot of songs don’t catch on around the stadium because most fans haven’t got a clue what any chants are. I’ve said this before, but tap any average random City fan on the shoulder in any stand from Colin Bell, North or East and ask them ‘what chant is being sung now?’ (let’s say it’s that Ruden Dias one for example), 90% of them wouldn’t have a clue what the chant was, what the words are…

Because away ticket allocations are so small now the club fucking pinch half of them (which is a fucking disgrace! buts that’s another topic) to dish out to nobodies, we only have around 4,000 fans (at a guess) going to away games regularly over the season. It’s a very very very small closed shop, so 99% of our fanbase never hear any new chants because hardly any go to away games. We also have no pubs around the Etihad so where other clubs have loads of pubs around their stadium and have loads of fans in these pubs belting out songs, our fanbase doesn’t experience that because we don’t really have any to get people in hearing songs sung. We don’t have YouTube channels with videos of fans singing songs for people who aren’t in the vocal areas to learn them. Our vocal sections at the Etihad are fucking tiny so we can’t fit enough in to get more than a couple of thousand hearing songs sung in those areas.

We couldn’t really think up any more ways to make it more difficult to get our fanbase to learn our songs.
You're obviously giving this plenty of thought and are passionate about improving things.
Just a couple of random ideas : -
People don't pay much attention to single's charts like they used to, so there isn't a constantly changing selection of catchy melodies being heard like there once was.
How difficult would it be to muscle in on a Karaoke backing track and write created lyrics for a chant which could be displayed on here ? Are there any copyright issues doing this ?
If it could be made to work well for a couple of players, it could catch on ?
There seems to be a fair few random posters suggesting lyrics and enjoying the creative side of it. The talent and imagination is amongst members of this forum for certain.

Been saying a few of those points for a while.

Can we have more songs / anthems about man city, at lease they dont have a shelf life where as a player comes and goes after a few seasons ( well last 15 years we have more loyal players )

Away games did get a lot of songs started and growing, but now less singers are getting tickets so how do we spread the new songs ?

To many songs and not enough singers, i think social media has given us to mand choices of songs for a player therefore fans are mixed up on which to sing.

Stop the same old songs but just changing the words for a different player, new song for a new player should have a new beat. Some of the new songs are actual songs not chants, to many lyrics so it can spread round the stadium. We need more hand clap songs, perfect example being the zabba song, thats why that carried on so well and spread round the stadium.

The ruben dias song is good, but dont sing it to fast. The hand clapping keeps the beat going and its a song that can carry on and on not just 12 seconds then die off. Laporte song likewise is good.

Never thought about the pub problem around Eastlands, and it is a problem, contributing to the song problem, but it's so true. Could be a bigger problem than everything else tbqh. New songs are done in small spaces and via repititon with a few lads and lasses prepared to look like tits for an hour and then permeate outwards. Natural selection will weed out the shite. We don't have many, if any, small spaces.

I sit in 305 so not that far away from the singing section but it is always difficult to pick up the words so that we can go along with them. OK with the simple older song/chants but anything new is impossible.

We really missed a trick when we moved from Maine Road; we should really have taken over the East Stand lower deck as our new ‘side’. The singing section is way too small.

The atmosphere has been good this season and has been better in general since lockdowns ended and we could get back to watching the footy live… safe standing has come in at the Etihad in that time and has possibly helped (it certainly has in 110-111 where they are allowed to stand now instead of constantly being told to sit down for years on end which killed that area).

The hand clap songs are okay, they’re ideal for away games, but it’s more of the anthem ones and City ones that the rest of the ground join in with more: Na na na naaa City/the best team in the land and all the world etc. always get around the ground whereas the clap along or player ones don’t really. Not once has Empty Seat At Home taken off around the entire stadium, for example.

The handclap ones are absolutely useless at Wembley. They just do not catch on, especially when we have a set of fans up the other end of the stadium who have loads of anthem type songs because they just drown us out.

But we do have a bit of a tired old song list. So many good chants we no longer sing for some bizarre reason, too few City chants get sung, too many player ones that don’t get going around the stadium at 0-0 at the start of games or when Cancelo has scored and someone tries singing something about John Stones who isn’t even in the squad (made that up as just an example but it is the sort of thing that goes on a lot), too many of the same few chants that the rest of the ground don’t join in with, and lack of ways for the masses to access new songs or get them aired.

It’s great if Nigel in 201 (made him up, again just an example) has made up a brilliant new City chant, one about the club/team and not an individual player, but he has no way to get it out to the masses with the obstacles we have in place.

He could move to the Singing section, but he might sit with six mates together and has since 2003 so won’t want to move.

I wish we had half a dozen proper decent boozers around the stadium, outdoor beer garden sort for the Sunnier months. I think that’s make a huge difference for people learning songs and getting new ones aired.

wasnt there rumoured to be a sort of retail/food/pub development being built around the campus? I certainly remember a survey being emailed out asking for feedback about it?
