Etihad atmosphere

When Silva scored the amount of fans that got up and left was absolutely embarrassing! It was like it was full time. At full time I reckon there was about 20,000 left in the stadium to clap the lads off, absolutely pathetic. Our support is fucking shit

Yep, numbers-wise it was the kind of walkout you'd expect if the opposition had scored an equaliser or a winner, not City making it 2-0 ffs - it was fucking bizarre!

Ha ha! It makes me laugh when people come out with statements like that. It could and should be a lot better at our place but the notion that loads of other Premier League grounds are absolutely rocking every weekend is as far removed from reality as you can get. Every set of fans are capable of a great atmosphere on any given day but all too often, the problems we experience are the same as those at other grounds with fans at many other clubs complaining about exactly the same things. From what I saw of the United and Liverpool games at the weekend, it wasn't exactly a wall of noise at either - my boss was at Old Trafford and said the atmosphere was flat for the most part probably due to nerves amongst fans, and during the last 10 minutes or so at Anfield you could hear the West Ham fans loud and clear whereas the Liverpool fans weren't exactly going out of their way in trying to roar their team on over the line - this despite having around 10,000 more seats in their ground this season plus their manager being more vocal than any other in the league in trying to encourage his fans to create a better atmosphere.

Palace probably have the best home atmosphere in the league but even that's dropped off a bit of late - I saw a Twitter post a few weeks back from a Palace fan who was creaming his pants over a video showing 30 or 40 of their fans in their Ultras section singing while 4-2 down at home to Liverpool. Fucking hell, the way he was going on you'd have thought the Holmesdale Road end was rocking. Compare that to Monchengladbach the other week where in the closing minutes of the game, and despite the disappointment of their team going out of the Champions League with a whimper, all 4 sides of the ground spontaneously got to their feet and chanted pretty much through to the final whistle. The difference between that and 30 or 40 Palace fans going at it is so stark that it's utterly fucking laughable, yet even more laughable is that on the Ultras-Tifo forum of all places, for some inexplicable reason Palace are ranked in the top 10 for best atmospheres in world football. They wouldn't even make the top 10 in Germany for fuck's sake!

True mate. Leicester only briefly outsinging us last week when they were 4 nil up. I wonder what effort people put in who call last night shit. I am in that atmospheric desert of 209 but I just sing whenever I want and a few join in from time to time.

I went to watch a couple of games in Italy last month and Atalanta (crowd under 20k) were more vociferous by far than any ground in the Prem.

Yeah, it was a good buzz in there last night mate - was a great laugh and while it would've been nice to see more join in, I actually enjoyed it far more than other home games of late despite it being a midweek night match in the middle of December. It was far easier to get things going in there than it was against 'Boro the other week despite that game being a traditional Saturday 3pm kick-off and there being less no shows. It really was hard work that day despite us arguably dominating the game more than we did last night.

As for the early leavers, what I couldn't get my head round was that the main exodus happened as soon as we scored the 2nd goal with fans streaming for the exits - did they get confused and thought Watford had scored instead?!

Agreed there mate with your point that it was easier getting songs going with fewer people singing. It stops there being two songs going round at once, fans get a chance to hear a song and carry it on, sometimes the confusion can cause a flat period of no songs. Same here though, enjoyed last night.

Next time we get a re group hopefully in the new north stand, fans wanting to sing must get in there in larger numbers than the re location in to 115 / 114

As your probably know, a crucial tool in the ultras / capo's kit is getting the stand to hush when there is confusion and then getting the next song going in unison. I know this isn't part of British fan culture but it helps to createsl good atmosphere in Italy and Germany etc

Criticism of our atmosphere could be applied to most Premiership grounds , the supporter (customer) base has changed , when Celtic and the Dippers go on about great european nights , thats all it is , the occasional european game , i have a couple of acquaintances who are season ticket holders at the dippers and blue dippers and they both agree their atmospheres are shite for 90% of home games , it the big games like us and the Rags that they are bothered about. So dont believe the narrative that our home support is any worse than other teams , it just isnt true because football has changed from a working class , get stuck in, get behind the team game , to an expensive , i am here to be entertained for my money , cheer when we are winning , and i will leave when i choose to leave game. Yes i am an old fart and i enjoyed going to Maine Road possibly more than the Etihad , it was felt like less of a business and more of an affordable sport , but the main difference is watching players like Micky Horswill or Yaya Toure , (no contest Micky everyday :) we have also won a few pots into the bargain and we are no longer in the shadow of the scum (and don't forget the Greenalls shite lager along with a burger that guaranteed gastroenteritis the next day :) Maybe a sentimental old c*nt but the club means just as much to me now as it did 50 years ago , coming from a family of four generations of blues it will never change

Because the whole of Manchester is in grid lock all the time. Couple that with the chilli peppers playing at the arena ....

People are always going to leave early until the infrastructure is sorted and transport is sorted out. All those roads were built to accommodate 20odd thousand people at the commonwealth games. Don't even get me started on the roads in and around central Manchester.

its not the whole of manchester though. it's mainly just the city centre. i would bet most fans aren't driving into the city centre. i park 5 minutes down the round and get home pretty quick tbh. trams aren't great, the buses aren't to bad. the amount of people leaving early to save ten minutes of a journey is ridiculous though, even when we are winning against barca or needing a really important goal, its the same people every week. we scored last night and on mass people got up and left. its just bizarre. the traffic/travel problems are just as bad/worse in london yet chelsea spurs, palace they all seem to stay til the end.

I'm not sure that its right to punish fans who dont turn up to midweek games (which is when most of the no shows occur). There used to be a bloke sat next to me who made a 400 mile round trip to watch City. He missed most midweek games. Of course he was there for the really big games eg City v United in 11/12. But that involved taking two half days off work and kipping on a mate's sofa. He was happy to buy his season card knowing he would miss more than a few games.

fair play to him for traveling that far. but my question would be what is the point of buying a season ticket if your only gonna go to the big games or a few games. it would be more convenient and cheaper to just buy individual tickets. i would support a rule whereby your st was suspended if you missed so many games. there are loads of people who would love to get season tickets, but can't because it says its sold out, yet there are people who never show up.

They vast majority don't drive to the ground though do they they get a tube which is half a mile long and comes every 2 minutes. Or a bus which comes every 5 minutes , or the dlr or a train ( probably every 10 mins) any of the other many and varied travelling options Londoners enjoy.

It's mad, that even in our sold out games, there's clearly a few thousand fans not there or at least that's the case for games not against the top clubs. Out of all the top teams it's more noticeable at us than anywhere else I'd say. Can't get my head around the notion of buying a season ticket to attend a handful of games. 1 it's probably not worth it financially and 2 it's making the place empty and contributing to the flat atmosphere.

Last night was probably the worst I can remember from a leage game since the takeover. That counts for attendance and atmosphere.

last night there was chaos in london travel wise. yet they all managed to get there or stay till the end. i just dont think the traffic problems are that bad unless your in the city centre. id say we are one of the worst in the league for people leaving early. lots of people do drive, but most dont park in the club car park and saving ten minutes off a journey - what is the point ?

when we are playing champions league games, when the grounds full of tourists, most of them manage to stay till the end. yet when we are beatign barcelona regular st holders leave 15 minutes before the end....
