Etihad atmosphere

Note...

Yes I was there.
Yes I sing all the time.
Yes I stand.

The main problem is the divide between SS block 117/118 (where the 1894G lads are)
And Block 110/112 also known as Kippax Corner (where I'm at)

the gap is where the away fans are so when 117/118 are singing, we can't always hear them, it doesn't travel well around to us as away fans drown it out or whatever...and vice versa when we start songs.

The solution is to either relocate away fans (which won't happen as the away coach parking is right behind the away end)
Or.... Turn the North Stand into one big singing section and shift all the families next to the away fans, moving all us lot who sing to be completely together and undivided.

Hopefully one day having a safe standing section (can't see why not as it's allowed in other European countries)

This would also keep away fans quieter as they can't really verbally abuse old grannies sat down with little Jimmy grimbles.

Finally... The clubs survey people seem to simply please us by asking us constantly the same fucking survey questions about atmosphere yet nothing ever changes.... As the showsec ****s regularly persist in asking people to sit down, any sign of emotional behaviour is greeted with threats of eviction and so on... How the fuck can atmosphere improve if we are treated like fucking animals?

Football is so fucking sanitised now its no wonder atmosphere is bobbins.

People might think i'm completely bonkers but the whole atmosphere/ match day experience over the last 3 years or so has made going to the match a real chore. It just feels so tepid and sterile and lifeless, people don't even get irate at refereeing decisions or flick the vs at away fans anymore, i don't know if it an age thing ( im in my 40s) or the feeling after the QPR game is an anti climax but i only go to games now out of duty. I think back to being a kid and big games and the like i could hardly sleep with nerves but now im just grumpy and pissed off and thinking i'd sooner try and get all the English and Scottish grounds in instead, perhaps i just hate modern football.

Couldn't agree more. I found myself sat there thinking how much I actually disliked a large part of our fanbase yesterday. I was sat in 110 and everyone was just fucking moaning from the very first minute, before it'd even gone sour. I'm 31 so I remember Maine Road, even though I was a kid. I sang a lot then and I sing a lot now, but difference is no one else joins in now and it's depressing. Away games are the only real saving grace, and they aren't perfect either. I just felt fed up leaving the ground, despite on the surface life being pretty good for City fans these days. Modern football sucks. It's just apathy, £10 pizza and drink deals, commercial fucking robot partners and grumpy gits sat about whining.

I'm glad you make so much noise we need more like you.

But the main problem is not 'the divide between SS block 117/118...' it's the fact that we (as a group don't sing).
I as at PSG for the UCL QF, they have 2 sets of fans in the stadium, at opposite ends, they are separated by the length of the pitch and the width of a running track at both ends. The noise they generated was amazing from about 30 minutes before kick off.
No excuses about the roof being too low, or whatever other shite we spout in our own defence, we're to blame, all of us.

I applaud the efforts the 1894 group have made; it takes a lot of energy and guts to actually do something instead of just moaning.
But the jury has deliberated, the results are in and the verdict is damning - it's not worked (or working - I know it's an on going process).
During one lull (of many) in the first half yesterday I looked across at the singing section behind the goal and there was a group of about 50, right at the back of the stand directly behind the goal trying to start a chant (good for them). They didn't get any help from the people around them and it all fizzled out very quickly. I presume the people in that stand relocated so they could be part of the singing section - if so what the hell are they doing?

Any attempt to do something about this is met with the usual negativity - disguised as coolness.
We're too cool to do the Poznam anymore as it's a bit naff.
We're too cool to have some knobhead with a drum because we're not like them dickhead Europeans.
We're too cool to cheer.

So we're stuck with the best manager in the world, in one of the best stadiums in the world, with one of the best squads in the world and we can't be arsed.

1894 group:- go to Poland or Germany - find out how they do it.
Let's copy them. Can't be that hard. Just need a drum and a group of people who will sing for 90 minutes.

End of rant.

You are right bud but as you point out we have far too many "cool" lads following city who are so fucking cool and original they don't want to chant as it will dampen their egos and they don't want to copy other clubs fans....

Even though they'll copy Ian browns hairdo in the 1980's and wear bucket hats.
Like fucking women many of our fans.

Too busy gelling their hair in the toilets and doing coke to be bothered about whether the club is doing alright or not.

Just there for the bandwagon/peer pressure.

"yeah I'll go in the singing section to look cool with all my mates, we're proper Danny dyer hooligans"

Yet they couldn't give a fuck about the sport.

Posing bastards.

I missed the game yesterday but so far this season I thought the atmosphere had improved. We are in 101 which has a mix of season ticket holders and day trippers. There is some singing when the South stand starts. What I would class as a constant buzz and a great deal of appreciation for the way the team is playing. Hear very little moaning which is a nice change from last season. Of course its different to the atmosphere in the 70's and 80's but the world has changed a good deal!
I don't go to away games so difficult to judge if we are better or worse than others but I still really enjoy attending and suspect the Club puts more effort into ensuring a good experience (city square etc) than most.

This all day long.

I go to Celtic Park frequently and most atmosphere generating techniques have been taken from Europe.
The drums and megaphones in particular.
I seen a few posts after the CL game where a few 'see if they do that against Inverness' were branded about.
The atmosphere generated in the CL comes from the entire stadium.
Domestically however, the signing section (Green Brigade) remain non stop, for 90 minutes.
The drums help, the fact that everyone around them wants to sing also helps.
There was negativity towards the group when the first started but now you'll find it hard to come across a supporter with negativity towards them.

1894 are brilliant like you say.
It takes guts and they are definitely a long the right tracks.
It wouldn't hurt to speak to the Green Brigade however...

The atmosphere at Celtic was amazing - the ground was shaking after their first goal. It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
I can't believe the people of Glasgow and Manchester are so different that we can't emulate them (or Dortmund or Munich or wherever).

I'm looking for a weekend when we play on Monday night and Dortmund are at home so I can stand on that big yellow stand and see what's it's like to sing like that.
Not sure I'll be up to it to tell the truth, but if I survive I'll report back.

Mate that's why I gave up my season ticket this season. Ended up going to the Saints game since my sister couldn't go, but it only reinforced my feeling that I made the right choice (for me and my circumstances). For those can can afford it, I feel it's worth buying a season ticket just to continue going to away matches, but since I couldn't afford many away matches anyway, there's little point for me. I don't spend as much as others, but I was still spending over a grand a year on football. With that money I went to Iceland, saw the northern lights, just got back from Italy. And next year I'm going to Cuba... and I still get to see EVERY City match on TV/laptop. Just seems like a better way to spend my limited money, considering the home games a like chores at the moment. Never thought I'd ever willingly give up a season ticket, but I don't regret it at all. Modern football is fucking gash for us fans.

1894 have been all over Europe, we've been to Germany, we have friends in Poland, Italy etc and we've tried to intergrate some of that culture onto our terraces, however the wider fanbase doesn't buy into a lot of it. Unfortunately, if we bring a drum, we end up with our own fans kicking off. They cry about flags being waved during the game (despiter being told this would happen before relocating). We can lead a horse to water and that's that.

As most have said on here, the ONLY way the atmosphere will improve is if everyone starts opening their gobs and supporting the team. It's not hard, and if you do it, the person next to you will join in. This is the best time to be a blue, so let's enjoy it!

The difference is they have bought into using a drum. Our fanbase is too 'cool' to do that.

The long and sort of it, in my opinion is, we are all getting older and prefer sitting down and watching the game rather than standing up and singing. Its as simple as that

personally would love to see more away fans at the etihad, when we do the north stand, i would have no problem in city allocating 5000 to the away team, it would add more to the atmosphere, everywhere you go now, its a poxy 3000 stuck in the corner, or in the gods, i would like us to be the 1st club that encourages large away followings.

Make NS and SS Level 1 safe standing. Atmosphere will always be shite with seats, always has been. Away games are good because they more like 'the old days' of terracing, although recent games at Spurs etc would seem that even that is changing :-(

Not 100% sure about that.
At the Bournemouth game there was a round of 'Stand up if you love City'. Went all around the ground - really good - people stood up and chanted
At the Everton game the singing section again tried to get 'Stand up if you love City' going.
As usual was first up, but nobody else joined in. Stuck it out for about 30 seconds - good job I don't care what people think of me.

Cut the gimmicks out, close the bars 15 minutes before kick off, tell the stewards to ignore people standing, stick the away fans at the top of third tier in a corner and get some of the old songs back. Get a capo, get a drum, smuggle some flares in, light some fire, wave some flags, get the players to wave arms in the air to the crowd, clatter one of the opposition in the first five minutes, stick the goalie in the back of the net, ban fans from videoing the game, cut the wifi signal, do something though rather than politely applauding as some of the best players we have ever seen at City do their stuff. Yes there will be bad days but there will be plenty of better ones, so get behind the players and raise the roof for 95 minutes or whatever all season not just for the derby, but every game. Some of these foreign teams don' shut up all game even if they are losing 4-0 they keep on backing the team. Take note everyone and do something

I can go back as far as the early 70's and whilst Maine Rd wasn't as bad, this trait was still there. Most of the time the prevailing attitude at least until there is a major key moment in the game is that sort of stereotypical Manc type cynicism. That said, when it does go it really goes. Obviously really big moments like Aguero 9320 or the preceding 1-0 in the derby but one of the loudest all round the ground ones I recall was around 94/95 when Newcastle visited MR under Keegan. Sellars scored first for them and then we went 2-1 up (Walsh debut goal?). I've rarely seen MR like that. Even a few Geordies who'd got tickets in the City part of The North Stand we're commenting ' never realised this place was as mad as this' (paraphrased).

There are other contributing factors I think. Firstly that ingrained hope it will go well but expect it to go wrong whilst arms folded mentality. Secondly, because of our long period of under-achievement and despite a loyal core, the percentage of home match attending fans that are in the late teens, twenties, early 30's, the one's who generally give it wellie, is maybe a lot lower than other clubs. This may change over the next 5/10 years with a sustained period of success as we attract local fans that might otherwise have opted for United.

Maybe too it is just that the profile of a large chunk of fans at other clubs is simply more 'blindly fanatical' Liverpool being the best example e.g. the pre- City/Chelsea coach parade and appealing/squealing every decision against them, whereas ours is one more of steadfast loyalty blended with self-criticism/moaning and the occasional 'roof-off' moment.

An atmosphere builds, sometimes weeks before a game in some instances, eg. Big cup, biggest rivals etc. I for one believe that there are a few killers. Everyone keeps talking about Celtic, yes very good and standing helps, of course. 1. You have/buy a ticket, 2. you go game and 3. you show your support and stay till the end. Too many at ours have only signed upto 1 or 2 of the above, sometimes, for some of our games, none of the above.

Think City Sq could be better for helping to get the atmosphere going at times so flat, Eg. Dancing robots wow and at half time too.

BTW 1894 keep it going.

Post from Dec 13

No stamina at times, too many away fans have the free reign to sing what they want
Simple really

A few things
1. The music City play, does it help, I would say no. Play some of the songs we sing on occasion or things that are uplifting more often
2. Relocation (know this is difficult) in each of the four stands there should be sections for those more vocal fans who currently sprinkled across all areas of the ground, 100 together in the North lower, 300 together in the CB you would see a massive difference. Help to create wraparound
3. Too many haters South Stand/Singing section arrogance.
4. Give NS level 2, freebees something that makes a noise.
5. Concourses, good for conversation and review. some times this is were concourse is generated.
6. City Square, well wow.
7. Songs although great, aren't long enough, little or no intro therefore they die out as other join in.

I sit in 105 (half way line 13 rows back). Yesterday there was a couple of tourists sat to my right; an oriental couple. Apart from me, the husband was the only fucker making any noise at all.
Not the first time this has happened; Americans, Germans, Israelis have sat next to me in those seats (they were occupied by a couple of regular season ticket holders for quiet a few years before their kids arrived and their priorities changed) and I'm always embarrassed by the lethargy of the people around me.

How difficult is it to clap your hands and shout 'come on City' when we are building from the back or win a corner or whatever.
How precious and self conscious do you have to be to be so timid you can't shout at a football match?

Get in your seat for the kick off.
Stay in your seat until the half time whistle blows and clap the team off.
Be back in your seat for the start of the second half.
Stay in your seat until the final whistle blows and clap the team off.
While the match is in progress encourage the team by clapping your hands, shouting or joining in with any songs that do materialize in our library of a stadium.

Piece of cake.

More angry with the fans yesterday than the team.
Wouldn't clap when we get a corner far easier if the ref just gives a goal kick each time and we can get on with the match :+)
