The Etihad could easily have a fantastic atmosphere. Safe standing on the Colin Bell stand side of the ground (ala Maine Road) or both ends.
Next they would have to go completely against the current social and Premier league flow. They would charge for tickets the same kind of prices they charge in Germany for those parts of the ground. This would make all games more affordable for those who are not professional/middle class people, after all making an intimidating atmosphere isnt their forte is it. The club would make it known that this will be an area of the ground where more raucous behaviour and colourful language will be tolerated and anyone going in there must be aware of this. The result would be an area of the ground that would be populated by mainly male youngish majority and a fair amount of older potty mouthed males (me) who prefer not to have to sit and watch football surrounded by the type of people who will get offended by someone telling the referee/opposition player or manager/City player or manager/one of his mates...that he is a naughty word beginning with C.
Sorry to say that whilst it is infinitely better that by and large it is perfectly safe to take women children and old people to football the unwritten criteria of the kind of people clubs want in the stadiums has resulted in a soulless support in most stadiums including ours. if its an atmosphere you crave then its more likely to be found in a busy pub with Sky.
