A multi-million pound swimming pool will be built in the heart of Beswick under plans to overhaul the city’s leisure facilities.
The £6.5m pool, which will be on Grey Mare Lane, will replace the Miles Platting swimming baths on Varley Street.
Council bosses say the plans will save more than £100,000 every year.
As the Advertiser reported last week, Manchester City Football Club will help fund the scheme and has pledged cash for the project as part of its new Etihad Campus in east Manchester.
The Blues will stump up £3m for the baths – half the cost – with the other half met through funding from Sport England and national sports governing bodies.
Town hall bosses say the Miles Platting centre is run-down, too expensive to run and poor value for money.
The swimming pools were built in 1978.
It is the only pool in Manchester – apart from the Aquatics Centre – which has an all-deep pool at two metres, which means it’s suitable for playing water polo.
That has attracted the GB Water Polo programme to the city and has encouraged the development of the City of Manchester Water Polo Club.
But the building is old and would cost more than £400,000 to maintain over the next 10 years.
Despite facing huge cuts forced by the government’s spending review, the town hall believes it can find the money to fund the scheme – and will save cash in the long run.
Of the scheme, Coun Mike Amesbury, Manchester’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: "These innovative proposals will mean state-of-the-art leisure facilities for residents of east Manchester.
"Just as significantly, they will save money over time in maintenance and running costs."
The closure of Miles Platting pool was announced last February as part of the council’s programme of spending cuts, following a 21 per cent reduction in its grant money from government.
There is no timescale for completing the projects but the management contract for the council’s leisure facilities is up for renewal in 2014
