And yet retail is still falling faster than the rest of the country despite the increase in the number of City centre residents which tells you something significant is going on. If people choose to live in the City centre its because they are time conscious, therefore these people don't spend hours Christmas shopping on Market St when it can be done in 15 minutes online on the 21st December.But it is booming in areas such as tech; I would argue the jobs market should have a larger impact on transport and infrastructure rather than retail. Of course it's never as simple as that, for example an increase in people living and working on the edge of the centre you would expect less need for radical transport changes but it should also impact retail footfall positively.
The roads despite shift from cars to bus and cycle lanes are still empty of cars. There is possibly a link. My Mum and Dad used to occasionally drive into Manchester for the odd item. They'd never do it now partly because it's just awkward to drive into Manchester and park.
