Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

Took some first time visiting friends down to The Grand Mosque yesterday then across to Saadiyat Island to The Louvre.

They were utterly amazed at the sheer scale of innovative, world class infrastructure developments under way...it almost took their breath away.

On Saadiyat they have a project underway on the water front with what looks like three ships standing on their stern at an angle with the bows reaching for the sky.

Must be nearly 200 meters tall.

Whatever they develop at The Etihad,it’ll be good.......our young Sheikh is not interested in second best !!

Abu Dhabi has always struck me as a upmarket, classy and better version of Dubai.

Dubai is all well and good, but for me very flash and superficial.
Dubai is a fantastic international city.

Safe,clean and very friendly.

The range of restaurants and the service they provide is fabulous.

Abu Dhabi is more Conservative,as reflected by the characteristics of the Royal Family and they tend to 'hide their light under a bushel'.

The Grand Mosque is beautiful and the development of the cultural quarter on Saadiat Island with the Louvre and Zayed National Museum is simply phenomenal.

The Emirates Palace Hotel, where City stay, is as oppulant as anything in Dubai which is only 40 minutes up the coast.

Both are great places.

Prefer Abu Dhabi myself, didn't like Dubai at all.Though if I was going to recomend anywhere or go back it would be Oman. Great destination.

@Gone for a Burton, they're never going to be anything like Ferrari World at the Etihad Campus what JRB posted yesterday would be a good shout.

Maybe the hotel they will open will be the one that city is sponsored by, is there any more chat with what is happening at the site

We were in Oman on Tuesday, beautiful country & lovely people.

Drove up through Hatta mountains and across the border, on Wednesday back to Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and Jumeirah

About 1.2 miles 'as the crow flies' but the shortest route I can find is 1.5 miles but that includes the muddy embankment behind Vermillion. Looks closer to 1.7 miles for a safer route but it shows that if they addressed some of the barriers for pedestrians the various routes could be shorter. Still too far to be attractive though. When the proposal for Sandhills Metrolink interchange came out, they talked about trying to get tram stops around a maximum 800metre distance for the majority of residents in the area (that's 1/2 mile or 2 minutes for Steve & Seb), mainly for a commuting perspective. So for occasional users like us and arena goers I think double that distance should be the top.

Sandhills (if it is still happening) will be about 1.2 miles by crow as well so although good for the Bury line users (0.5 mile nearer than Victoria), it is not much of an improvement than Central Park. In short, there isn't going to be any new tram or train stop inside a 1 mile walk until a stop is built on the line that runs behind the athletics stadium.

Pretty depressing, really.
It’s about £8 as the taxi drives from the Waldorf if that helps.

City policy is to keep matters confidential until an official announcement or launch is made.

There are very significant developments and commitments in train in the group and all will eventually be revealed.

The surrender and fire sale of the red cheeks and the potential for new types of owners will probably exercising minds too.

It really is a case of watch these spaces

Chatting to somebody quite well informed on metrolink service the other day. he told me they aren’t a profitable business and finding it hard to improve the general service. Also in terms of upping the amount of trams will be hard as they need to order more but issues getting hold of any in next 2-3 years. Electric bus, park and ride and improved walking paths etc it is then!
Public transport should be run as a not for profit organisation subsidised by local government. Until we start running public transport for the public it will always be shite and expensive

Not good enough for some on here :)

Latest update from my mate (but still no drawings): -

- Contractor finalising logistics & programme with City
- Enabling works definitely starting over the summer
- Bulk of works across next 2 summers
- Stand extension, hotel, museum, hospitality and offices with a covered plaza

Trying to find out where the hotel and offices will be situated. Couldn't confirm if the extension is a continuous 2nd tier, which is the most important piece, but said the roof was slightly different than the SS.

Thanks, @Gone for a Burton what does this mean?

All we need is a "Here we go" I agree with @jrb that the hotel and club shop will be moved into a building that will be built on the former "Super Casino" land along with other buildings with pubs and other leisure facilities, you say that this is taking place over the next summers, the covered plaza will be the last part to get done as the where the worker's units are just now as the new city square would need to be next to the improved North Stand.

Here is a suggestion away fan zone so City make money out of away fans as well, you could place it next to the Nexen Bridge as pictured below

Would make sense. I go into the stadium via Entrance G, which is the next spiral to the right. This plot has always seemed like wasted space, certainly the plot to the right adjacent to the bridge ramp that joins at the lights on AT Way.

The Emirates Palace will NOT be coming to Ashton New or Old Road.

it's a 7 * PALACE where you can buy gold bars out of vending machines !!
