A question for the more informed amongst us in the construction business. Is it standard practice to hire one company for architectural work and another for construction. Why not use one company?

Have you ever seen an Architect laying bricks ?

Standard practice. I'm sure you could hire one company only, but the speciality skills really need both, especially on something of this scale. Their as likely be separate firms engineering, landscaping, organising the legal stuff as well as.

Haha No! You've misunderstood my point. There are big companies that have both functios. Like AECOM that city supposedly used for the Architecture also does construction.

-- Fri Sep 14, 2012 6:58 pm --

It is normal practice but not universal. The majority of private sector projects are let using Design and Build. The contractor here is responsible for design as well as construction.

Design and Build tends to result in dull and unimaginative designs. If you want a project to make a statement it is normal to engage an architect (maybe from overseas) and not go directly to a builder.

Interesting. As they say you learn something everyday.

Btw. For those who are asking about the bridge. Check http://www.cityfootballacademy.co.uk/academy-training-centre/bridge/ (It seems to be updated at least the picture does).

If that render is correct(North Car Park), does anyone think City and MCC are looking at building affordable housing/apartments as apart of the Etihad Campus plan?.

Arsenal have done something similar with Highbury, but those apartments aren't affordable..

Well there is supposed to be housing for 200 ( I think ) academy members.
In the previous published proposal it said it had accommodation for 40 academy players. So I guess the others will be living off-site.

Not sure if me memorys playin-up but i thought somebody mentioned 6000 trees to be planted ?..and somebody else mentioning the canal terminating into the complex.
That's got me thinking, you could get to the stadium on match days via boats on the Ashton Canal considering it starts on Ducie Street near Piccadilly station & gardens. Admittedly, it would need widening and couple of bridges would probably need knocking down for higher boats.

I believe the club with New East Manchester are looking at the Holt Town Ind Estate which is now completely out of place and an affront to the plans of encouraging more people to live in a new green east Manchester. The place is an absolute tip and new housing development has been proposed.

It's not unthinkable that a wharf could be created there next to Holt Town and the stadium. Visitors (and locals even) to the city could then arrive via Piccadilly and get either a tram or canal boat to the Campus vice versa. Indeed, I would say the person who suggested this is believable.

It would be a good use considering the transport problems our ground has post-match. I hate canals which are dead and not used.
