Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

From what I remember the gasometer is going to be used in some shape or form within the now named Etihad Campus. It's a landmark, so I would assume it's still got a purpose within the overall plan. Then I could be wrong. :-?

You could make a tremendous lightning display using it.. just as an example

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

Im sad,I like Gasometers and I would be sad if this fine example was lost. Im surprised we havent utilised it already with a huge banner draped over it.

Does anyone know if the gasometer (and the land it stands on) is still functioning or is it obsolete? Who owns it? Have we bought it? Will it be knocked down or is it protected (like a listed building)?

Cheers for any info!

I stand to be corrected but I'm sure it's both obsolete and "listed".

According to article above published in 1999 they are not used anymore and Transco planned to demolished all but a few that were listed buildings

But Trevor Pickford, curator at the Leicester Gas Museum, wants us to stop and appreciate these ubiquitous vestiges of industrial Britain before it's too late.

"I think people will miss them. The most common question I'm asked here is do we still use the gas holders," says Mr Pickford.

for fuck sake trev, get a life!!!!

Via @southstand_mcfc on Twitter Howard Bernstein hosted a luncheon where a well connected Blue says the future stadium will have a retractable roof.

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

Future stadium?

Does that mean new or current with changes?

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

I always assumed the gas towers still worked. The drum in the middle is not always in the same position which to me said that it was working. Plus there is always a smell of gas around there but i suppose that is because they were in use many years ago.

I seem to remember that when Manchester was bidding for the 2000 Olympics, part of the plan was for the towers to be decorated to look like Giant Coca Cola cans. Would be decent to dress them up a bit now. That bottom end of the car park looks so desolate!

I have heard on Twitter that they are actually going to finish the Campus then move the stadium to the Carrington site. It was from some bloke who is friends with Steve Redmond's babysitter so must be true

I was actually taking the piss out of the source, however it is the first I've ever heard of it!

I took my dog for a walk around the bottom carpark today, whilst looking down at the land where the pipes come from the gasometer, and then wrap around to the canal at carpark 3 (side of tennis centre). I noticed all the land has been completely cleared of all trees and bushes, there is more land there than originally thought, as it was so overgrown.
All this land is at canal level and there is also a gate behind the gasometer that brings you out on a side street, just off Bradford Road. Ideal for a canal side bar or apartments maybe. After all these years I wonder why it has all been cleared, it wouldn't have been cheap to do so.
