Club hailed for investment
12 Apr 2013 10:44

Manchester City’s role in the transformation of east Manchester has been hailed by a town hall boss.

Eamon O’Rourke, Manchester council’s head of community and cultural services said the Blues were vital to the community and added that their Arab ownership is here to stay.

Speaking at the Soccerex European Forum, at Manchester Central, Coun O’Rourke highlighted the financial benefits the club bring to the city.

He said: “The council gets £4m a year from the club’s use of the (council-owned) Etihad Stadium. This is directly re-invested back into sport.”

Coun O’Rourke added that the Blues could have chosen a different location for their £120m training complex, under construction across the road from the Etihad Stadium.

“The training ground is a remarkable story,” he said. “Most Premier League training grounds will not be in urban setting. In this case it could have been out in the Cheshire Plains.

“The club do not see themselves as a club that’s landed there. They see themselves as part of that community.”

Rumours have been rife about plans for the swathe of land next to the Etihad Stadium which was earmarked to become a Super Casino until the House of Lords pulled the plug.

Coun O’Rourke revealed that talks were ongoing.

“A key strategy is to create footfall 35 days a year on the site,” he said.

“The work that is ongoing is around attracting business to that site.”

PS - Just noticed it says '35 days a year'. I assume that's a typo and it's meant to be 365 days. I'll see if they correct it. I've tweeted them on the MEN's City news feed, anyway, so if it is a typo then they know about it now.

Thanks for posting Petrusha.
Quite possibly a type given the current standards at the MEN (unfortunately)...I hope so...35 days a year?!!

Yes, it's either a typo or a huge scaling down of the plans (35 days is barely any more than City home games in league and cups plus a few concerts!). Let's hope it's the former, then! ;)

I suspect there is a 6 missing between the 3 and the 5?

Eek...the irony of my post :(

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

So this is what it feels like to get praised in the press! It's about time someone praised us for the work we are doing in the local area and the best bit is this is only the beginning.

And like others have said, it probably is a typo saying 35 instead of 365.

Definatley a typo. The main remit is to create footfall for 365 days a year not just the 25 for football.

So guessing.(dates are just a figment of my imagination)

Training Academy.(2012-14)
Stadium expansion. Both tiers(2015-2019)
Leisure destination(2020/2022-23 depending on build time)
Other elements of the Etihad Campus(2023-2030)

2030 I'll be in my 70's, I hope I live to see this and the success it brings....I really envy all you 20 year olds out there!! What wonderful owners we have!!

Yeah, this is the only downside to all of this development. I wish I was much younger, as I'm knackered now and don't think I'll get to see it all![/qu

I will be in my 70s, so all you young ones enjoy the ride. but I hope to see as much as I can b4 I wont be able to get to city. mind I can watch on sky
