Thought any plans for a National Basketball centre would be closer to (or embedded in) the Etihad Campus, but I guess it's part of the wider East Manchester developments.

No, the Eastlands Community Plan always made clear that it would be at Belle Vue. I think that the basketball governing body is slated to take space in the 'House of Sport' office building at the Beswick Hub if that goes ahead eventually (but it will be a subsequent phase of those plans, because it isn't in the first phase which includes the leisure centre across the road from the sports clinic and sixth form college that will be on land at the edge of the Campus). And if there's an indoor arena built next to or near the Etihad Stadium at some point, as has been consistently whispered about, then both Manchester Giants fixtures and basketball internationals could well take place there, I guess. Basketball could therefore play quite a significant role in the sporting development of East Manchester as a whole, but the National Basketball Centre has always been planned for Belle Vue.

Thanks Petrusha - clear now.
That House of Sport plan seems to have been filed away somewhere post initial `hoo harr`.

anyone know when the new Campus will be completed?

If you're talking about the developments as a whole, including the training ground and all areas around the stadium as discussed in detail in the Eastlands Regeneration Framework, then you're looking at 2026-ish, I think. They put a 15-year timeframe on it but I can't remember whether that was in 2011 or 2012. However, there you're talking about the so-called 'collar site', the current north car parks, the land to the west of the stadium and relocation of the current athletics/squash/tennis facilities and so on. It's a huge job.

If you mean the training ground and the first phase of the Beswick Hub sports and community facilities (6th form college, swimming pool and sports science facility), then the training ground is due to open in time for pre-season ahead of the 2014/5 campaign. I think the community facilities will also be up and running by then, but I'm not 100% sure and don't have time to check.

As far as I know, it's still on the cards. It's just that they're building the other facilities first.

I'm sure that work starting on the national basketball centre will encourage them to commit to taking space in the new development. The English Institute of Sport currently has a performance centre next to the stadium: http://www.sportcity-manchester.com/pages/indoortrack.asp, and their national HQ is in the city at Quay Street. I think they've indicated a willingness to go to the Beswick Hub. British Cycling is committed to keeping its HQ in Manc and is currently based at Stuart Street, M11, so would be a natural fit here. And the Manchester County FA is looking for a permanent HQ too and has been mentioned for this development.

I suspect that will give them enough of a core that's already committed to using the space that they'll go ahead and build the facility. With more improvements in the area to come, I think they can legitimately hope to attract more decent quality tenants to it in due course.

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

Agree - all seems positively pointed to a go ahead. As you've mentioned above (and talked about by one or two on here) it's a long term, staged project...I'm sure it's all worth the wait and I'd rather this type of planning than the 'knock it up quickly and cheaply' approach.

Yes. The wait is a bit frustrating at times, but I'm sure that it will be pretty exciting as it starts to take shape bit by bit.

The Campus is due be finished in two year stages up to 2030. Of course by then I would imagine further plans by other developers will be in place and as such will continue long into the future.
