Manchester City unveil 12,000-seat expansion plan for Etihad Stadium
12 Jul 2013 06:00
The move would create more cut-price £300 season tickets although more than one in three will be a new type of ‘premium’ seat

Manchester City have unveiled multi-million pound plans to expand their empire further – by adding up to 12,000 seats to the Etihad Stadium.

Club bosses say demand is soaring, with the ground more than 99 per cent full last season.

From today, Blues fans are being asked their views on the radical expansion plans, which could create the third biggest Premier League ground after the Emirates and Old Trafford.

The south stand would be boosted by 6,000 seats, including an extra 600 for away fans.

Depending on reaction and ticket sales next season, the north end could also be expanded by the same number, taking capacity to 60,000.

The move would also create more cut-price £300 season tickets although more than one in three will be a new type of ‘premium’ seat.

City chiefs aim to submit a planning application by the end of the year, with a view to starting work next April. Building would be complete by the start of the 2015 season.

Pete Bradshaw, the club’s head of infrastructure, said the expanded ground, alongside the £120m Etihad campus being built next door, would create a ‘world stage of football’.

He added: “It’s an honest consultation with anybody with an interest in where we are going.”

Bosses believe there is demand for expansion at the ground’s south end, moving it outwards by 16m and creating extra third tier seats. Some 2,400 would be new ‘premium’ seating with a new concourse, bar and upgraded hospitality.

A consultation pod at City Square will be open until the end of September. From today fans can also visit <a class="postlink" href="http://www.mcfc.co.uk/stadiumfuture" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.mcfc.co.uk/stadiumfuture</a> .

Re: Etihad Campus & potential new stadium

No point in creating more seats for away fans as sadly very few clubs take up the full allocation - although City are probably required to do this to match Premier League regulations. We need at least 3k for away fans and we give them less than that now.

Reduce ticket prices for away fans. Just announce it and other clubs will follow.

I also like the idea of cheap season tickets. I just hope the club really mean it. At the moment I sit in the South Stand Tier 2, and the season tickets are reasonably priced, £550, but match-day prices are around £50. The value seasoncard is it a marketing trick to keep City at top of the fair play charts, or do the club have a real commitment to affordable football? We'll see when the ticket pricing for the new stand is announced.

Looks like the expanded ends will have a new roof. Very similar to the Emirates too, hoping the exhibition at the stadium has more (and better) pictures and mockups as the ones on the website are a tad small.

Public consultation opens around Etihad Stadium development

Manchester City Football Club opens an exhibition at the Etihad Stadium on Friday 12 July to present the Club’s options for the potential expansion of the ground’s seating capacity.

The Club is seeking the views of fans, local residents and other stakeholders at the free exhibition at the Etihad Stadium where people will be asked to fill in a short questionnaire.

The same information and questionnaire can also be viewed online and responded to at <a class="postlink" href="http://www.mcfc.co.uk/stadiumfuture" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.mcfc.co.uk/stadiumfuture</a>

The capacity of the Etihad Stadium is currently around 47,500. The Club’s two proposed options are to undertake the expansion of the South Stand alone (phase 1), to increase matchday capacity to around 54,000, or to expand both the South and North Stands at the same time (phases 1 and 2), to increase matchday capacity to about 60,000.

In the event of planning permission being granted, it is the Club’s current intention to first proceed with the development of the South Stand. However a phased or concurrent approach – pursuing the additional construction of an extension to the North Stand - remains a possibility.

This proposed expansion of the Etihad Stadium would allow the club to introduce a new Seasoncard for £299, and to improve the hospitality offer.

The questionnaire also asks fans of both Manchester City and other football clubs for their views on the possible relocation of visiting fans on matchday.

This first phase of public consultation runs throughout July and August and will be followed by a formal public consultation in the autumn ahead of the club proposing to submit a planning application to Manchester City Council in December.

Spokesperson: Pete Bradshaw, Head of Infrastructure & Corporate Responsibility; said:

“Manchester City Football Club strives to provide its supporters and visiting fans with one of the best possible matchday experiences in the Premier League and European football. Games are selling out frequently prior to going on open sale and there is rising demand from supporters for more season tickets, matchday tickets and premium seating. This is why we are considering these expansion proposals.

“We will be in touch with every fan who would be potentially affected by the changes in phase 1, and we encourage fans, residents and anyone who has a point of view, to visit the exhibition in person or online and tell us what they think.”

At last images that confirm what some of us have been saying right from the start of the Vegas thread about a new roof

Looking at the image it appears that the pre-tensioned cable net remains in place hence the sloping inwards new roof guess that during the construction the roof panels will be removed and there maybe reduced capacity and awhile in the open
