Everton (H) | Post Match Thread

Pep wants more control thats why Mahrez and Grealish play. Rico inverted means more possession and control in midfield. We are built in this system to control and supply Haaland.

Those tactics look to not work against teams that sit back and counter in Everton, Brentford, struggled with Fulham etc. But in a one off cup game

against teams that will come at us it could work wonders. I put in the Pep performance thread but thinking about it the tactics today would have been good against a team in the champions league that attacks. Like a Leipzig

So itll work in the 5 games a season where teams come at us ?

I'm sure you've taken some heat for this but I don't think it's as ridiculous as it may come off... I'll start by saying he's exceeded my expectations for him BUT my worry was always that he'd go missing for large parts of the game as he's not great technically and can't drop between those half spaces like a Jesus or Alvarez, and most teams we play have 2 defenders on his back and two midfielders in front of him.
Which means there should be loafs of space elsewhere, especially out wide, it doesn't help thT we've got players in our front three with no pace who couldn't score in a brothel. Haaland isn't the issue, we're not getting the moat of him. We need to get Foden and Alvarez on the pitch with him

We didn’t create enough as we didn’t have enough time.
Coupled with the fact KDB, Bernardo, Grealish & Mahrez were completely off the pace.

We allowed them to timewaste for 30 minutes by handing them a stupid goal with a shit pass and shit defending, they wouldn’t have been timewasting as much had we still been 1-0 up or indeed if we’d have created enough to be more than 1-0 up which we didn’t.

Disappointed but not surprised to be honest. They came with a game plan and executed it perfectly it was ugly to watch that’s for sure but it worked. They have watched the likes of Brentford and Crystal Palace do the same and that is the blue print on how to stop us and it works. For all Pep’s genius he refuses point blank to have a plan B. He didn’t start with his strongest team and yet again refused to change it around until very late in game and yet again it cost us. Our defending has been poor for most of this season as have a lot of our overall performances. I still think we will win the league but we really can’t afford to drop anymore points at home to the likes of Brentford and Everton. If we do then we don’t deserve to win the title. We dropped two more points today, not the end of the world but as I say disappointing but not surprising unfortunately.

true. this is what I am getting at. this system is good at countering teams that want to play quick football on the ground by challenging our possession like madrid, liverpool etc. but against teams that sit back, we have a problem when the opposition crowd out the central passing lanes. instead of countering that by putting our midfielders in-between the lines our midfielders go to the wings resulting in the loss of connection between the base of the midfield and haaland. so we end up going for hopeless crosses.
