They still had players around them to help show them the ropes and look after them on the pitch.
Now the pressure will be on them to perform week in,week out...they simply aren't good enough in today's league.
We had the same thing in the 80's with Lake,Hinchcliffe etc.
They were quality, but didn't have enough quality around them to carry them when they dipped in form.We couldn't afford to go out and buy a top player to help them, unlike the rags.
But hey....If united fans want to believe some romantic notion that it's the mid 90's again and average players like Welbeck and Gibson alone will win them the PL title, then crack must be even cheaper than I thought.
But you have bought it. I suggest you go into your clubs accounts from 89 onwards and see how many times you've broken the transfer record. How many times you've paid top dollar wages etc. However in your mythical world your teams always been full of Salfordians and no outsiders are ever let in. Do me a favour will you and take your f'king head out of the sand for once.
I'm from a family of reds and even they have the brains to understand what's going on at the moment. But then again they're not huddled underneath their Giggsy duvet cover knocking one out to pictures of Hargreaves on a medical table.
