The crown estate doesn't prove republicans wrong. It's not like the queen manages the portfolio herself.

I'm with Toma.
It doesn't have to prove anything, it simply kills the sponging argument dead.

Said it before if i called my house mate a turk because his grandad was from Turkey he would quite rightly get the hump so why is it okay to use this sort of thing when we talk about the queen

Personally I couldn't care less where someone is from or their family heritege and only mention a nationality in the very rare instances where it is pertinent.

In this instance - a sovereign ruler of a country - it is. Very much so.

Whereas I'm guessing your mate probably isn't having a nation celebrate his Jubilee this weekend? In which case if I met him I wouldn't give a fuck where he was from, or indeed his father or father before him.
No it's fucking bullshit. Where was she born? That's all that matters.

You're no better than someone telling asians to "go back home" (even though they were born in Britain). Why should someone's parents nationality matter?

Just an easy stick to beat them with and well below your usual style of debate.

It is significant because of the rhetoric and myth making that surrounds the royal family in general. Their long roots in this green and pleasant land, a link with the distant past, etc. The fact that historically we imported our royal families is important for the discussion, regardless of the position you take politically.

It is more than faintly amusing that the same people who use terms like 'brown nosing' to describe people who have a positive view of the monarchy are the same people who if they met our owner would forget their inherent disdain for hereditary privilege and would be scrabbling for the best means of accessing his back passage.

I am still awaiting a response from my exact post a few pages back about HRH Sheikh Mansour!! The ironic posts of some people berating our royal family as leeches etc yet our own Sheikh Mansour is a royal!!

They would not be reverant because of his inherited position though would they GDM. I think it would mainly be due to the fact that he's ploughed untold millions of pounds into a football club they've supported all their lives and made that club league champions.

Has the Queen done this? Has she fuck. Selfish cow.

Doesn't matter Toma-He is a Royal end of!

Although the ownership of some property can be traced back to Edward the Confessor, the estate as a whole essentially dates from 1066. After the Norman Conquest, all the land belonged to William "in right of The Crown" because he was King. Despite centuries of change in law and custom, the underlying ownership of The Crown still exists and there is always a presumption in favour of The Crown unless it can be proved that the land belongs to someone else.

I don't regard the royal family giving some of their unearned wealth back to the people as them doing us a favour. But I doubt we're going to persuade each other on that.

He has only been able to bestow his largesse upon City as a consequenceof his hereditary power and wealth.

I've always got the vibe that the Queen is a Reading fan.

God save our gracious Queen
Long live our noble Queen

Two of the more decent posters on BM accusing me of casual racism?

I could respond with a lengthy defence but surely all I need say to illustrate how this instance differs completely from Blueboy's mate with a Turkish grandparent or your Asian analogy SWP is....she's the Queen of England!!
The constitutional monarch of the commonwealth.

I think reminding people that until 1917 the present-day royal family were Saxe-Coburgs is a justified thing for a anti-royalist such as myself to mention on a Jubilee weekend without it being stained with the accusation of bigotry.

Were people who wanted an English manager in charge of the national football side all racists? Actually, bad example, most of them probably were.
But crucially some were not!
